Consultant Neurosurgeon

Job Summary:

The Consultant Neurosurgeon is a highly skilled medical professional responsible for providing expert care in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with neurological disorders. This includes performing complex neurosurgical procedures, offering preoperative and postoperative care, and providing leadership in the management of neurosurgery patients. The Consultant Neurosurgeon will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, train and mentor junior staff, and contribute to academic and clinical research within the field of neurosurgery.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Care:
    • Diagnose and manage a wide range of neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injury, spinal disorders, brain tumors, vascular disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.
    • Perform complex neurosurgical procedures such as craniotomies, spinal surgeries, brain tumor resections, and endovascular procedures.
    • Provide preoperative and postoperative care, ensuring the safe recovery of patients following neurosurgical interventions.
    • Monitor and manage critically ill neurosurgery patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), ensuring optimal neurological function and recovery.
    • Participate in emergency neurosurgical procedures as part of the trauma team for patients with head or spine injuries.
  2. Surgical Leadership:
    • Lead and supervise surgical teams during neurosurgical procedures, ensuring adherence to best practices and patient safety protocols.
    • Guide junior surgeons, residents, and fellows during surgeries, offering technical guidance and procedural expertise.
    • Ensure the use of state-of-the-art equipment and technology in neurosurgical procedures, and stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.
  3. Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with other specialties, such as neurologists, oncologists, radiologists, and rehabilitation specialists, to provide comprehensive patient care.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, tumor board meetings, and clinical rounds to review complex patient cases and develop treatment plans.
    • Coordinate with the medical, nursing, and allied health teams to ensure integrated care for neurosurgical patients.
  4. Patient Consultation and Family Communication:
    • Provide expert consultation to patients and their families, explaining diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes of neurosurgical interventions.
    • Address concerns and provide compassionate, clear communication to patients and families, particularly in complex or high-risk cases.
    • Counsel patients on long-term care, rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes following neurosurgery, as needed.
  5. Research and Education:
    • Engage in clinical and academic research in neurosurgery, with a focus on improving surgical outcomes, advancing techniques, and exploring new treatments.
    • Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, and junior surgeons, providing opportunities for hands-on training and development in neurosurgical techniques.
    • Participate in or lead educational activities, including case presentations, journal clubs, and surgical workshops.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed medical journals and contribute to national and international neurosurgical conferences.
  6. Administrative Duties:
    • Ensure proper documentation of patient histories, treatment plans, surgical procedures, and outcomes in compliance with hospital standards and regulations.
    • Participate in departmental meetings and committees, providing input on clinical protocols, policies, and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Contribute to the development of departmental strategies and goals, helping improve the quality of care, patient satisfaction, and departmental performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Qualifications:
    • MBBS + MCh/DNB in Neurosurgery
    • MS/DNB in General Surgery or equivalent.
    • MCh/DNB in Neurosurgery or equivalent post-graduate qualification in Neurosurgery.
  • Experience:
    • At least 5-7 years of experience in neurosurgery, including significant exposure to both elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures.
    • Experience in treating a wide variety of neurological conditions, including brain and spinal tumors, cerebrovascular disorders, and trauma.
    • Proven track record of performing complex neurosurgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques and advanced neuroendoscopic surgeries.
