Job Summary:
The Consultant Pediatric Intensivist is a highly skilled and experienced medical professional responsible for providing expert critical care to critically ill children and neonates in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This position requires a comprehensive understanding of pediatric and neonatal care, the ability to manage life-threatening conditions, and a strong commitment to teamwork and patient-family interactions. The consultant will play a key role in clinical leadership, teaching, and mentoring junior medical staff, as well as contributing to clinical research in pediatric intensive care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Care:
- Provide expert critical care for patients in the PICU or NICU, including those with complex, life-threatening conditions.
- Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill pediatric and neonatal patients, including those requiring mechanical ventilation, inotropic support, or advanced life support.
- Manage multi-disciplinary care plans and coordinate treatment with pediatric specialists, neonatologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of patient assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and outcomes.
- Perform invasive procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, lumbar punctures, and other critical care procedures.
- Provide effective communication with patients’ families regarding their child’s condition, treatment options, and prognosis.
- Supervise and support junior intensivists, pediatric residents, nurses, and other healthcare team members in delivering high-quality care.
- Leadership and Collaboration:
- Lead and guide the PICU or NICU team, ensuring clinical protocols and practices are in alignment with best practices and institutional guidelines.
- Foster a collaborative approach to care, coordinating with various specialties and teams to deliver comprehensive treatment.
- Take responsibility for managing critical and emergency situations, leading resuscitation and stabilization efforts as required.
- Supervise and train junior doctors, fellows, residents, and nursing staff, providing education on pediatric intensive care, clinical decision-making, and procedures.
- Teaching and Training:
- Provide education and training to medical students, residents, fellows, and nursing staff in pediatric critical care medicine.
- Lead regular academic teaching rounds, case discussions, and journal clubs in the PICU/NICU.
- Mentor junior staff and assist in their professional development by providing feedback, guidance, and support.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of educational programs and simulation-based training in pediatric intensive care.
- Quality and Safety:
- Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines and protocols for the management of critically ill children and neonates.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives in the PICU/NICU to enhance patient outcomes and safety.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of care delivery and patient safety practices in the unit.
- Participate in departmental audits, mortality and morbidity reviews, and root cause analyses to drive continuous improvement.
- Research and Academic Development:
- Engage in clinical and academic research focused on pediatric critical care, seeking opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in clinical trials and other research initiatives aimed at improving pediatric and neonatal care.
- Contribute to the advancement of evidence-based practices in pediatric intensive care and neonatal medicine.
- Collaborate with academic institutions and other healthcare providers to further the development of pediatric critical care.
- Administrative Responsibilities:
- Participate in departmental meetings, hospital committees, and institutional initiatives related to pediatric intensive care.
- Assist in the development and review of clinical protocols, guidelines, and policies for the PICU or NICU.
- Support the administration in staffing, resource allocation, and operational planning for the unit.
Required Qualifications:
- Educational Qualifications:
- MBBS + MD/DNB in Pediatrics.
- MD/DNB in Pediatrics or equivalent, with fellowship or specialty training in Pediatric Critical Care or Neonatology.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of clinical experience in Pediatric Critical Care or Neonatology, including at least 2-3 years in a senior or consultant role.
- Proven experience in managing critically ill children and neonates, including those requiring advanced life support.
- Experience in PICU/NICU settings with strong clinical, procedural, and decision-making capabilities.
Qualification – MBBS + MD/DNB in Pediatrics
