Assistant Professor Microbiology

Job Summary:

The Assistant Professor in Microbiology is responsible for teaching microbiology to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, conducting research in microbiology, and contributing to the development and enhancement of the microbiology curriculum. The role requires a strong background in microbiology, particularly in clinical microbiology, immunology, and microbial diseases, along with a passion for teaching and research.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching & Education:
    • Deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials in microbiology, covering areas such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, immunology, and microbial pathogenesis.
    • Supervise laboratory and practical sessions, guiding students in the safe and effective handling of microbial cultures, microscopic examination, and diagnostic techniques.
    • Develop and update teaching materials, including lecture slides, presentations, and laboratory manuals.
    • Conduct and evaluate students’ assessments, including assignments, quizzes, lab reports, and exams.
    • Mentor and advise students, providing academic guidance and helping them understand the clinical relevance of microbiology concepts.
    • Integrate case-based learning, problem-solving approaches, and modern teaching technologies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Research:
    • Conduct independent and collaborative research in microbiology, focusing on areas such as infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, immunology, or microbial genetics.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at national and international conferences.
    • Pursue research funding opportunities and manage research projects.
    • Supervise graduate students, research fellows, and interns in their microbiological research projects.
  • Curriculum Development:
    • Contribute to the development, review, and improvement of the microbiology curriculum to ensure it meets contemporary educational standards.
    • Collaborate with other departments to integrate microbiology content into clinical and laboratory-based medical programs.
    • Incorporate innovative teaching methods, such as e-learning, virtual labs, and flipped classrooms, into the curriculum.
  • Clinical Integration:
    • Provide microbiological expertise to medical students, helping them understand the clinical applications of microbiology, including diagnostics, antimicrobial therapy, and infection control.
    • Teach clinical microbiology techniques, including the identification of pathogens, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and laboratory safety protocols.
    • Collaborate with clinical departments to provide a practical understanding of microbiology in medical practice, particularly in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Participate in departmental and institutional committees, contributing to strategic decisions and academic planning.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance, grades, and attendance.
    • Ensure proper maintenance and safety protocols in microbiology laboratories, including equipment upkeep and safe handling of pathogens.
    • Assist in organizing departmental events, workshops, and conferences focused on microbiology and infectious diseases.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay updated with recent developments in microbiology, clinical microbiology, and medical education through attending conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs.
    • Engage in collaborative research with other departments or institutions, promoting interdisciplinary knowledge exchange.
    • Participate in professional societies and networks related to microbiology and infectious diseases.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • MBBS + MS/MD in Microbiology.
    • Postdoctoral research experience in microbiology or a related field is preferred.
