Job Summary:
The Senior Resident in Radiation Oncology is a clinical and educational role that involves providing high-quality radiation therapy to patients with cancer while gaining advanced training in radiation oncology. The Senior Resident will work closely with attending physicians, medical physicists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver individualized radiation treatments, manage patient care, and contribute to the academic activities of the department. This role also includes responsibilities for educating junior residents, participating in clinical research, and supporting the teaching and training of medical students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Responsibilities:
- Assist in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of cancer patients requiring radiation therapy.
- Work alongside consultants and senior physicians to develop individualized radiation treatment plans for patients with various cancers.
- Administer radiation therapy, monitor patient progress, and adjust treatment plans as necessary under the supervision of consultants.
- Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings and clinical rounds to discuss patient cases and collaborate on treatment strategies.
- Provide follow-up care for patients receiving radiation therapy, including managing side effects, addressing complications, and coordinating care with other specialists.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of patient evaluations, treatment plans, and clinical progress.
- Radiation Planning and Delivery:
- Participate in the design and planning of radiation therapy regimens, including the use of advanced techniques like 3D conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
- Collaborate with radiation therapists, medical physicists, and dosimetrists to ensure accurate radiation delivery, adhering to clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Assist in the administration of various types of radiation therapy, including external beam radiation, brachytherapy, and intraoperative radiation therapy, under supervision.
- Monitor and review patient progress during radiation treatment cycles, making necessary adjustments to improve outcomes and minimize side effects.
- Patient and Family Interaction:
- Provide compassionate care, addressing patients’ concerns and explaining the details of their radiation treatment, potential side effects, and expected outcomes.
- Counsel patients on radiation therapy, including the risks, benefits, and long-term impact on their health.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families, offering support and guidance throughout the treatment process.
- Educational Responsibilities:
- Participate in departmental educational activities, including case presentations, journal clubs, and radiation oncology seminars.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior residents and medical students rotating through the radiation oncology department.
- Attend and actively participate in departmental rounds, conferences, and workshops to enhance knowledge and expertise in the field of radiation oncology.
- Research and Academic Activities:
- Contribute to ongoing clinical and laboratory research projects in radiation oncology.
- Assist in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data.
- Contribute to academic writing, including preparing abstracts, posters, and papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in institutional research activities, clinical trials, and investigations into new radiation techniques and cancer treatment protocols.
- Administrative Responsibilities:
- Assist in maintaining accurate patient records, ensuring compliance with hospital regulations and radiation oncology standards.
- Support the department’s administrative tasks, such as scheduling patient appointments, coordinating treatment plans, and managing inventory for radiation therapy supplies.
- Help ensure adherence to safety standards, regulations, and quality control procedures in the radiation oncology department.
Required Qualifications:
- Educational Qualifications:
- MBBS + MD or DNB
- Completion of postgraduate training in Radiation Oncology or a related field (e.g., MD or DNB in Radiotherapy).
- Experience:
- At least 1-2 years of experience in radiation oncology or a related clinical field, typically obtained during residency training.
- Experience with the use of radiation treatment technologies and understanding of radiation therapy principles.
- Strong clinical background with an interest in cancer treatment and care.
