Senior Resident Psychiatry

Job Summary:

The Senior Resident in Psychiatry plays a crucial role in providing high-quality care to patients with mental health disorders, assisting in teaching and training junior residents and medical students, and contributing to the academic and research activities of the Psychiatry department. This role involves diagnosing and treating psychiatric conditions, providing psychotherapy, and participating in interdisciplinary teams to manage patients with complex psychiatric needs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Provide direct patient care in the inpatient and outpatient psychiatry settings, including conducting psychiatric assessments, diagnosing mental health disorders, and developing treatment plans.
    • Administer and monitor psychiatric treatments, including medications, psychotherapy, and other interventions, for patients with conditions such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders.
    • Participate in psychiatric consultations for other departments and multidisciplinary teams, ensuring comprehensive care for patients with co-morbidities or complex psychiatric conditions.
    • Conduct routine rounds, participate in case discussions, and provide input on treatment strategies for patients.
    • Provide emergency psychiatric care, including managing acute psychiatric crises, suicidal ideation, and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Teaching & Education:
    • Supervise and mentor junior residents, medical students, and nursing staff, providing guidance in patient care, psychiatric evaluations, and treatment.
    • Conduct teaching sessions and clinical case discussions for residents and medical students, sharing knowledge and expertise in psychiatric diagnosis and management.
    • Assist in the preparation of educational materials, including case studies, reading assignments, and clinical guidelines.
    • Participate in departmental meetings and academic programs to contribute to the ongoing development of the Psychiatry curriculum.
  • Research:
    • Engage in clinical and/or academic research projects focused on psychiatric disorders, treatment modalities, or mental health policy.
    • Contribute to the preparation of research papers, posters, and presentations for national and international conferences.
    • Stay informed about current developments and research trends in the field of psychiatry and integrate new knowledge into clinical practice.
    • Support research efforts in the Psychiatry department by assisting with data collection, analysis, and writing research papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Professional Development:
    • Continuously improve knowledge and skills by participating in continuing medical education (CME), conferences, and workshops related to psychiatry.
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and psychotherapeutic techniques.
    • Participate in interdepartmental meetings, workshops, and training programs to enhance clinical skills and knowledge in the psychiatric field.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including psychiatric evaluations, treatment plans, and progress notes.
    • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development of clinical protocols, policies, and procedures.
    • Assist in the preparation of reports for audits, performance evaluations, and quality assurance activities within the Psychiatry department.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with other medical professionals, including psychologists, social workers, nurses, and occupational therapists, to provide holistic care for patients with mental health conditions.
    • Participate in case discussions and collaborate with other specialists to ensure integrated care for patients with complex or comorbid conditions.
    • Foster a supportive, team-oriented environment within the department and across the institution.

  • Education:
    • MBBS + MS/MD in Psychiatry
