Senior Resident Neurosurgery

Job Summary:

The Senior Resident in Neurosurgery is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to patients under the guidance and supervision of attending neurosurgeons. The role involves participation in advanced surgical procedures, patient management, and contributing to academic and research activities within the department of neurosurgery. The Senior Resident will also have responsibilities for mentoring junior residents and medical students.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Duties:
    • Assist in performing and eventually independently performing neurosurgical procedures, including but not limited to craniotomies, spinal surgeries, and neuroendoscopic procedures.
    • Conduct patient evaluations, including history taking, physical examinations, and interpretation of diagnostic imaging and lab results.
    • Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for patients.
    • Monitor and manage post-surgical recovery and potential complications.
    • Provide emergency care for neurosurgical cases, including trauma and acute conditions.
  2. Patient Management:
    • Work closely with the attending neurosurgeons to develop comprehensive treatment plans for patients.
    • Perform routine and complex clinical tasks as necessary, such as managing ICU patients, coordinating with other specialties, and ensuring continuity of care.
    • Educate patients and their families about diagnoses, treatment options, and recovery processes.
  3. Teaching and Mentorship:
    • Supervise and mentor junior residents, medical students, and interns.
    • Participate in educational rounds, case discussions, and departmental teaching sessions.
    • Contribute to the development of educational materials and resources.
  4. Research and Academic Contribution:
    • Participate in clinical and basic neuroscience research projects.
    • Present research findings at institutional meetings, conferences, and in academic publications.
    • Stay current with the latest advancements in neurosurgery and integrate new knowledge into clinical practice.
  5. Administrative Duties:
    • Assist in managing departmental schedules, ensuring efficient coordination of surgery and outpatient clinics.
    • Document patient care accurately in medical records and maintain confidentiality in line with hospital policy.
    • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and participate in department meetings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree (MBBS + MCh Neurosurgery).
  • Completion of internship or equivalent clinical training.
  • Postgraduate enrollment or completion of a relevant residency program in Neurosurgery.
  • Strong understanding of neurosurgical procedures, patient care, and relevant medical principles.
  • Excellent clinical and surgical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for patient interaction and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in advanced neurosurgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery.
  • Previous experience in a teaching or mentorship role within a medical or surgical environment.
  • Research background in neurosurgery or related fields.
