Position Summary:
The Senior Resident in General Surgery is a post-graduate trainee position that involves hands-on clinical and surgical responsibility under the supervision of faculty members. The role includes assisting in surgeries, managing surgical inpatients and emergencies, teaching junior trainees, and participating in academic and research activities. The position provides advanced training in general and sub-specialty surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical and Surgical Duties:
- Manage patients in outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, emergency settings, and intensive care units under supervision.
- Assist in and independently perform minor and selected major surgical procedures as per competency and supervision levels.
- Participate actively in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.
- Conduct and interpret diagnostic tests and investigations relevant to surgical cases.
- Handle surgical emergencies and trauma cases as part of on-call duties.
Teaching and Academic Activities:
- Participate in teaching activities, including bedside clinics, case presentations, and surgical demonstrations for undergraduate (MBBS) and junior residents.
- Attend and contribute to departmental academic sessions such as seminars, journal clubs, and mortality/morbidity meetings.
- Assist in examination-related duties, including internal assessments and practical exams.
Research and Publications:
- Engage in departmental or institutional research projects.
- Assist in data collection, analysis, and manuscript writing for publications.
- Present research findings in conferences and contribute to scholarly literature.
Administrative Duties:
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of case sheets, discharge summaries, operation notes, and medico-legal records.
- Adhere to institutional policies and protocols related to surgical safety, infection control, and patient care.
- Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and hospital committee work when assigned.
Qualifications:
- Educational:
- MBBS with MS/DNB in General Surgery from a recognized university/institution.
- Registration:
- Valid registration with State Medical Council or National Medical Council (NMC or equivalent).
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Sound knowledge of general surgical principles and practices
- Proficiency in performing surgical procedures appropriate to training level
- Good clinical judgment, emergency response skills, and patient care ethics
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities
- Aptitude for teaching and willingness to learn
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience in sub-specialties like laparoscopic surgery, trauma, or surgical oncology
- BLS/ACLS certification or training in emergency surgical care
- Research publications or prior conference presentations
