Senior Resident General Medicine

Job Summary: The Senior Resident in General Medicine is a key clinical role in the Department of Medicine, responsible for providing high-quality medical care to patients, supporting the teaching of medical students, residents, and junior doctors, and engaging in research activities. The Senior Resident will be involved in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, while also contributing to the academic and administrative responsibilities of the department. This position provides an excellent opportunity for advanced training in general medicine with exposure to diverse clinical cases and medical disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Provide comprehensive medical care to patients in the hospital, including inpatient management, outpatient consultations, and emergency services.
    • Conduct thorough medical assessments, including history-taking, physical examination, and diagnostic investigations, to accurately diagnose a wide range of medical conditions.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans for patients with both common and complex medical conditions, including chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, respiratory disorders, and cardiovascular diseases.
    • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including specialists, nurses, and allied health staff, to deliver integrated patient care.
    • Monitor patient progress, make adjustments to treatment plans as needed, and ensure timely and appropriate interventions.
    • Provide round-the-clock care as part of a rotational on-call schedule, ensuring timely response to medical emergencies and patient needs.
    • Assist in the management of critical patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), including administering life-saving treatments and coordinating multidisciplinary care.
  2. Teaching & Academic Responsibilities:
    • Assist in teaching medical students, junior residents, and interns in clinical settings, focusing on diagnosis, treatment strategies, and patient management.
    • Lead teaching rounds, presentations, and case discussions for medical students and residents, fostering a learning environment.
    • Participate in departmental academic activities, including seminars, workshops, and conferences, to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in general medicine.
    • Contribute to the development of educational materials, including lectures, case studies, and clinical guidelines for the department.
  3. Research Responsibilities:
    • Participate in clinical research activities, including case studies, observational studies, and clinical trials.
    • Assist in collecting data, analyzing research findings, and preparing research papers for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals.
    • Stay current with emerging medical trends and contribute to evidence-based practices within the department.
  4. Patient Care Coordination:
    • Ensure effective communication with patients and their families, explaining medical conditions, treatment options, and expected outcomes in a clear and compassionate manner.
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide holistic care, including the coordination of referrals to specialists, physical therapy, and rehabilitation services.
    • Assist in the discharge planning process, ensuring continuity of care for patients post-hospitalization, including follow-up appointments and medications.
  5. Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medical histories, test results, treatment plans, and discharge summaries.
    • Assist in the preparation of departmental reports, audits, and quality assurance activities.
    • Participate in departmental meetings, case reviews, and clinical governance activities, contributing to the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Pursue ongoing professional development through continuing medical education (CME) programs, workshops, and conferences.
    • Stay informed of current research, medical innovations, and best practices in general medicine.
    • Engage in self-directed learning, pursuing specialization in areas of interest within general medicine.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education:
    • M.B.B.S. or equivalent medical degree.
    • Postgraduate training or enrollment in a residency program in General Medicine.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical experience in General Medicine or related fields after completing the internship.
