Professor Psychiatry

Job Summary:

The Professor of Psychiatry will serve as a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry, contributing to the educational, clinical, and research missions of the department. The role combines responsibilities for teaching psychiatric residents, medical students, and fellows, providing expert clinical care, conducting innovative research, and advancing the field of psychiatry through scholarly contributions and leadership.


Key Responsibilities:

Teaching and Education:

  • Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and practical sessions on psychiatric topics, including clinical psychiatry, psychological theory, psychotherapy, pharmacology, and neuroscience.
  • Supervise and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty in their clinical and research work.
  • Participate in the design and development of educational curricula for psychiatry programs, ensuring they are evidence-based and up-to-date with the latest practices and guidelines.
  • Lead clinical rotations, workshops, and other training activities in psychiatric settings, guiding students and residents in diagnostic skills, therapeutic techniques, and patient management.
  • Promote active learning through case-based discussions, simulations, and role-playing.

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide expert psychiatric care to patients in a hospital, clinic, or outpatient setting, specializing in diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental health conditions such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, and substance abuse.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team in managing complex psychiatric cases, collaborating with psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in the development of treatment plans, including psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, for patients with psychiatric illnesses.
  • Maintain a high standard of patient care, ensuring evidence-based practices and ethical guidelines are followed.
  • Provide expert consultation to other departments and healthcare providers on psychiatric care and mental health issues.

Research and Scholarship:

  • Lead and engage in innovative, high-quality psychiatric research in areas such as neurobiology, treatment methods, psychiatric disorders, or public health approaches to mental health.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Seek and secure external funding through grants, collaborations, and partnerships to support psychiatric research.
  • Supervise and mentor students, residents, and fellows in their research projects, promoting scholarly inquiry and academic development.
  • Contribute to the academic community by participating in ongoing research collaborations with national and international psychiatry experts.

Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and initiatives focused on curriculum development, faculty development, and strategic planning for the department.
  • Lead or contribute to accreditation efforts, ensuring that the department meets and exceeds educational, clinical, and ethical standards.
  • Actively participate in mentoring programs for medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty.
  • Serve as a role model for professionalism, empathy, and ethical conduct in both clinical and academic settings.
  • Engage with community outreach programs and advocate for the promotion of mental health awareness and the reduction of stigma around psychiatric care.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Medical degree (MBBS + MS/MD or equivalent) with board certification in Psychiatry.
  • Completion of a fellowship in a psychiatric subspecialty (e.g., child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry) is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of clinical experience in psychiatry, including direct patient care and supervision of residents.
