Job Summary:
The Professor of General Surgery will play a pivotal role in advancing the department’s academic and clinical missions. The position involves delivering high-quality surgical education, conducting cutting-edge research, and providing leadership in both patient care and departmental activities. This role will also focus on the mentorship and training of medical students, surgical residents, and fellows in general surgery.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching and Education:
- Develop and deliver lectures, seminars, and clinical skills sessions on general surgery topics, including preoperative care, surgical techniques, postoperative care, and management of common and complex surgical conditions.
- Supervise and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows during their clinical rotations, providing guidance in both surgical practice and patient management.
- Lead teaching in the operating room, providing direct instruction in surgical procedures, patient assessments, and surgical decision-making.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the general surgery curriculum, ensuring it reflects current surgical practices and the latest research advancements.
- Participate in and support the academic evaluation of students, residents, and fellows, assessing their clinical competence and academic progress.
- Lead case discussions, journal clubs, and clinical conferences to promote evidence-based decision-making in surgery.
Clinical Duties:
- Provide expert care to patients requiring surgical interventions, including elective and emergency surgeries, in a hospital, outpatient, and/or surgical center setting.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management of patients, ensuring that patient care is of the highest quality.
- Perform a broad range of general surgery procedures, including abdominal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and soft tissue surgeries, while maintaining a high standard of care.
- Manage complex and high-risk cases, offering expert decision-making in both routine and emergency settings.
- Participate in on-call services, providing surgical expertise in emergency and urgent care situations, such as trauma, acute surgical conditions, and other critical care needs.
- Monitor patient outcomes, ensuring that all surgical procedures are performed with optimal care and precision, while minimizing complications.
Research and Scholarship:
- Lead and conduct original research in general surgery, focusing on areas such as surgical techniques, patient outcomes, innovative therapies, minimally invasive surgery, or other subspecialties within general surgery.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present them at national and international conferences, contributing to the advancement of surgical knowledge.
- Seek and obtain research funding through competitive grants, industry partnerships, and institutional support.
- Supervise and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in their research activities, encouraging the development of their scientific skills and critical thinking.
- Foster interdisciplinary research collaborations with other departments, healthcare institutions, and industry partners to advance the field of surgery.
Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership within the Department of General Surgery, contributing to departmental meetings, strategic planning, and decision-making processes.
- Participate in faculty development, mentoring junior faculty, residents, and students to promote academic and clinical excellence.
- Assist in the recruitment, development, and retention of faculty members, promoting a collaborative and supportive work environment.
- Lead or participate in departmental committees focused on curriculum development, quality improvement initiatives, patient safety, and surgical protocol development.
- Contribute to the department’s mission by promoting academic excellence, research innovation, and the development of the next generation of surgeons.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Medical degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) with board certification in General Surgery or related surgical subspecialty.
- Completion of advanced fellowship training in a specific area of general surgery (e.g., colorectal surgery, trauma surgery, endocrine surgery) is preferred but not required.
- A minimum of 7-10 years of clinical experience in general surgery, with significant experience in teaching and mentoring students, residents, and junior faculty.
