Consultant Pediatrician

Job Summary:

The Consultant Pediatrician is responsible for providing high-quality medical care for infants, children, and adolescents. This includes the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of pediatric conditions, including both acute and chronic illnesses, infectious diseases, growth and developmental concerns, and complex pediatric cases. The Consultant will lead and supervise pediatric teams, including residents and junior doctors, provide educational leadership, and contribute to research and quality improvement activities. The role also involves working closely with other specialists to manage pediatric patients with multi-system conditions.

Key Responsibilities:Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care:
  • Provide comprehensive pediatric care to newborns, infants, children, and adolescents, including general health assessments, preventive care, immunizations, and treatment of illnesses.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage pediatric medical conditions, including respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, infectious diseases, allergies, dermatological conditions, and chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy.
  • Provide acute and emergency care for children with conditions such as dehydration, infections, accidents, or trauma.
  • Perform routine health screenings, physical exams, developmental assessments, and provide appropriate referrals to specialists when necessary.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for children with complex or long-term conditions, working closely with families to address medical, emotional, and social needs.
  • Monitor growth, development, and nutrition to ensure that children meet expected milestones.
  • Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care:
  • Provide critical care for sick neonates and children in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), including the management of ventilators, invasive monitoring, and resuscitation efforts.
  • Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatric intensivists, and other specialists in the care of critically ill infants and children.
  • Supervise and coordinate the care of preterm infants, low birth weight babies, and children requiring intensive observation and intervention.
  • Emergency and Acute Care:
  • Provide emergency pediatric care in a hospital setting, including management of pediatric trauma, acute respiratory distress, anaphylaxis, infections, and other urgent conditions.
  • Lead the resuscitation of critically ill children, ensuring timely intervention and optimal outcomes.
  • Manage pediatric emergencies such as sepsis, dehydration, and acute toxicological exposures.
  • Preventive Care and Vaccination:
  • Administer routine immunizations and advocate for vaccination schedules.
  • Provide counseling to parents on child health, disease prevention, and lifestyle adjustments.
  • Educate parents and caregivers on the importance of early screening for developmental delays, vision and hearing issues, and genetic conditions.

Teaching and Educational Responsibilities:

  • Supervision and Mentorship:
  • Supervise and mentor pediatric residents, interns, medical students, and junior medical staff, providing guidance in clinical skills, patient management, and medical decision-making.
  • Organize and conduct pediatric rounds, case discussions, and teaching sessions to enhance learning opportunities for junior doctors.
  • Offer feedback, review clinical cases, and guide medical staff in improving their skills and knowledge.
  • Academic Contributions:
  • Participate in teaching sessions, including lectures, workshops, and seminars on pediatric medicine for both internal staff and external audiences.
  • Present complex pediatric cases, new research findings, or emerging trends in child health at departmental and hospital meetings or external conferences.
  • Contribute to the academic and research initiatives of the department, including the publication of research articles, case reports, and reviews in peer-reviewed journals.

Research and Quality Improvement:

  • Clinical Research:
  • Lead or collaborate in pediatric research projects aimed at improving patient care, understanding pediatric diseases, and advancing treatment protocols.
  • Design and conduct studies on pediatric clinical outcomes, new treatments, and diagnostic methods.
  • Encourage and support junior staff in research activities, helping with research design, data collection, and analysis.
  • Quality Improvement and Patient Safety:
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the clinical care provided by the pediatric department, focusing on best practices and evidence-based medicine.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines, protocols, and policies aimed at improving patient safety and care quality.
  • Monitor and review clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and department performance, making recommendations for improvements as necessary.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Patient Documentation:
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and timely medical records for all pediatric patients under care, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and legal requirements.
  • Document all medical procedures, treatments, and follow-up care, including the coordination of referrals and consultations.
  • Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams:
  • Work closely with other specialists, including pediatric cardiologists, pediatric neurologists, pediatric surgeons, and dietitians, to ensure comprehensive care for children with complex, multi-system conditions.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, social workers, and psychologists to address the holistic needs of pediatric patients and their families.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews and ensure effective communication between healthcare providers.
  • On-Call and Emergency Duties:
  • Participate in the on-call rotation to provide emergency care for pediatric patients outside regular working hours.
  • Respond promptly to pediatric emergencies, ensuring appropriate triage, stabilization, and treatment.

Qualifications and Requirements:Educational Qualifications:

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from a recognized institution.
  • MD, DNB, or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Pediatrics.
  • Fellowship or specialization in pediatric subfields (e.g., pediatric cardiology, pediatric nephrology, pediatric endocrinology) is desirable but not mandatory.
