Consultant Nephrology

Job Summary:

The Consultant Nephrologist is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care of patients with kidney-related conditions, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), hypertension, and patients requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. The role also includes clinical leadership, mentorship, and participation in quality improvement and research initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert care for patients with a broad range of nephrological disorders including glomerular diseases, diabetic nephropathy, electrolyte imbalances, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • Manage patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis; oversee dialysis units and protocols.
  • Assess and prepare patients for renal transplantation; collaborate with transplant teams for pre- and post-operative care.
  • Conduct outpatient nephrology clinics and inpatient ward rounds.
  • Perform procedures such as central venous catheter insertion, renal biopsy, and therapeutic apheresis (if applicable).
  • Supervise and train junior doctors, residents, and nursing staff in nephrology and dialysis care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and develop individualized care plans for complex renal patients.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical documentation and treatment records.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, evidence-based practice, research, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Engage in public and patient education regarding kidney health and disease prevention.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology (e.g., MD, DNB, MRCP with CCT in Nephrology, or equivalent).
  • Valid registration with the national medical council or licensing authority.
  • Fellowship or recognized specialty training in Nephrology is required.
  • Minimum Fresher to 3 years of post-specialization experience in nephrology and dialysis management.
  • Experience with critical care nephrology and transplant nephrology is an advantage.
