Consultant General Surgery

Job Summary:

The Consultant in General Surgery is responsible for providing expert surgical care, including assessment, diagnosis, and operative management of a broad range of general surgical conditions. The role includes leadership in patient care, education and training of junior staff, involvement in clinical governance, and support for quality improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform a wide range of elective and emergency general surgical procedures.
• Provide pre-operative and post-operative care for surgical patients.
• Lead surgical ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and operating theater sessions.
• Supervise and train junior doctors, residents, and interns in surgical techniques and patient management.
• Collaborate with anesthetists, nursing teams, and other medical professionals for integrated patient care.
• Participate in the surgical on-call rota for emergency and trauma cases.
• Ensure accurate documentation of surgical procedures and patient care in medical records.
• Contribute to clinical audits, research activities, and continuous quality improvement.
• Adhere to hospital policies, national guidelines, and professional standards.
• Engage in continuing medical education and professional development.

Qualifications and Experience:

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
• Postgraduate qualification in General Surgery (e.g., MS, FRCS, MRCS, or equivalent).
• Valid registration and license to practice with the relevant medical regulatory authority.
• Minimum 2 to 3 years of post-specialization experience in general surgery.
• Competence in laparoscopic and open surgical techniques.
