Consultant General Surgery

Job Summary: The Consultant in General Surgery will provide expert surgical care for patients with a wide variety of conditions requiring general surgical intervention. This includes conducting pre-operative assessments, performing surgical procedures, and providing post-operative care. The Consultant will also be involved in teaching, training, and mentoring junior medical staff, while contributing to the development of surgical services and protocols within the department.

Key Responsibilities:

• Clinical Duties:
  • Conduct assessments, diagnosis, and treatment of patients requiring general surgery.
  • Perform a wide range of general surgical procedures including, but not limited to, laparotomies, appendectomies, hernia repairs, and cholecystectomies.
  • Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for patients.
  • Manage emergencies, trauma patients, and critically ill patients in need of surgical intervention.
  • Collaborate with other medical professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients based on clinical needs.
  • Ensure optimal recovery of patients through continuous monitoring and interventions.
• Leadership and Mentorship:
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior surgeons, residents, and medical students in the surgical department.
  • Provide support and guidance in complex surgical cases and decision-making.
  • Lead multidisciplinary team discussions, including the development of care plans for complex cases.
• Administrative and Clinical Governance:
  • Participate in the development and review of clinical protocols, guidelines, and pathways for general surgery procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records according to hospital protocols.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, case discussions, and audits.
  • Ensure compliance with medical standards, quality assurance, and patient safety regulations.
  • Lead or participate in research projects and quality improvement initiatives within the surgery department.
• Continuing Education and Research:
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, keeping up to date with the latest developments in general surgery.
  • Attend relevant conferences, seminars, and workshops to further knowledge and skills.
  • Contribute to research activities, clinical trials, and publications related to general surgery.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Medical degree (MBBS + MS/MD, DNB) with valid licensure.
• Completion of a recognized surgical training program and board certification in General Surgery.
• A minimum of [X] years of experience as a consultant or senior surgeon in general surgery, with a proven track record of performing complex surgeries.
