Job Summary:
The Consultant in General Medicine is a senior physician responsible for providing comprehensive medical care for a wide range of medical conditions. The role involves diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with acute and chronic illnesses, supervising junior medical staff, and contributing to the teaching, training, and research activities of the department. The Consultant will also collaborate with specialists from other departments for multidisciplinary patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide expert care and management of patients with a variety of medical conditions, including common diseases, chronic illnesses, and acute medical emergencies.
- Perform thorough patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
- Interpret laboratory results, imaging studies, and diagnostic tests to develop comprehensive treatment plans.
- Offer medical consultations for inpatients, outpatients, and emergency department patients.
- Oversee and manage the clinical care of patients in the hospital or outpatient clinics, ensuring timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment.
- Coordinate with specialists for patients requiring multidisciplinary care and manage complex cases.
- Patient Management:
- Diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal disorders, infectious diseases, endocrine issues, and more.
- Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans for patients, regularly assessing the effectiveness and adjusting care plans as needed.
- Provide counseling to patients and their families on treatment options, lifestyle changes, and disease management.
- Supervise the medical care of patients in intensive care units (ICU), emergency departments, or wards, depending on the situation.
- Teaching and Mentorship:
- Supervise, mentor, and train junior doctors, residents, interns, and medical students in clinical and diagnostic skills.
- Conduct and participate in teaching rounds, lectures, and workshops for medical staff.
- Guide junior staff in decision-making processes and improve their clinical abilities.
- Contribute to the continuous education and development of the medical team within the department.
- Research and Academic Contribution:
- Engage in clinical research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care and hospital practices.
- Participate in presenting research findings at conferences, seminars, and workshops.
- Publish research results in medical journals and other peer-reviewed platforms.
- Stay updated on the latest advances in general medicine and integrate new knowledge into clinical practice.
- Administrative Duties:
- Ensure thorough documentation of patient care, maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical records in accordance with hospital policies.
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality control, and audits to maintain and improve standards of care.
- Assist in the development and review of clinical protocols, guidelines, and policies within the department.
- Collaborate with hospital management in strategic planning, service development, and departmental improvements.
- Other Responsibilities:
- Provide on-call services, including evening, weekend, and holiday shifts, as required by the institution.
- Respond to medical emergencies and act as the senior physician in critical care settings.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including surgeons, specialists, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Required Qualifications:
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Postgraduate qualification in General Medicine (MD, MRCP, or equivalent).
- Board certification in General Medicine (where applicable).
- Extensive clinical experience in general medicine, including acute and chronic disease management.
- Excellent diagnostic and clinical management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for patient interaction and teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Sub-specialty training or interest in areas such as cardiology, respiratory medicine, or endocrinology.
- Previous experience in an academic or teaching role.
- Research experience in general medicine or related fields.
- Participation in quality improvement initiatives or clinical audits.
