Consultant Gastroenterology

Job Summary:

The Consultant in Gastroenterology is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of patients with disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and liver. The role includes advanced endoscopic procedures, inpatient and outpatient care, teaching responsibilities, and participation in clinical governance and quality initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide specialist care for patients with gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreatic diseases.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and ERCP (if trained).
• Lead and manage gastroenterology inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and emergency referrals.
• Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, and other multidisciplinary teams.
• Supervise and train junior doctors, residents, and medical students in gastroenterological care and procedures.
• Participate in endoscopy on-call rota and provide emergency GI bleeding management.
• Contribute to clinical audits, research projects, and quality improvement programs.
• Ensure thorough clinical documentation and adherence to hospital and national guidelines.
• Support the development of new services and innovations in gastroenterology.
• Uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and patient safety.

Qualifications and Experience:

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
• Postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology (e.g., MD, DNB, MRCP with specialty certification in Gastroenterology).
• Valid registration with relevant medical council or licensing body.
• Fellowship training or board certification in Gastroenterology is preferred.
• Minimum 2 to 3 years of independent practice or consultant-level experience in Gastroenterology.
• Skilled in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
