Consultant Critical Care

Job Summary:

The Consultant in Critical Care is responsible for managing critically ill patients in the ICU, providing advanced life support, and overseeing the care of patients with complex medical, surgical, or trauma-related conditions. The role involves comprehensive patient management, decision-making in high-pressure environments, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The consultant will also be involved in teaching, research, and quality improvement activities.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Critical Care Management:
    • Provide expert care for patients in the ICU, including the management of life-threatening conditions such as respiratory failure, septic shock, multiple organ failure, and post-operative recovery.
    • Oversee and manage invasive monitoring techniques such as central venous lines, arterial lines, and dialysis.
    • Administer advanced life support, including mechanical ventilation, vasopressor therapy, and nutritional support.
    • Manage patients on ventilators, including weaning strategies, and guide sedation and analgesia for critically ill patients.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
    • Lead ICU rounds and participate in collaborative decision-making with intensivists, anesthetists, surgeons, nursing staff, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive patient care.
    • Develop individualized care plans, considering the patient’s medical and surgical history, and coordinate care with other departments.
  • Emergency and Acute Care:
    • Take part in the management of emergency cases and life-threatening situations in the ICU, including trauma, cardiac arrest, and multi-organ failure.
    • Provide consultation for critically ill patients admitted from the emergency department, surgical units, or other hospital wards.
  • Teaching and Mentorship:
    • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including critical care fellows, residents, and nurses.
    • Contribute to educational programs, including formal teaching, bedside training, and clinical simulation exercises for medical students and residents.
    • Participate in regular training programs and contribute to continuing medical education (CME) activities for ICU staff.
  • Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement:
    • Participate in clinical audits, research, and evidence-based practices to improve ICU care.
    • Engage in quality improvement initiatives, including the development and implementation of critical care protocols and guidelines.
    • Ensure compliance with infection control practices and hospital policies in the ICU.
  • On-Call and Emergency Coverage:
    • Provide on-call cover for critical care services, responding to emergencies and managing critically ill patients across various departments.
    • Oversee the ICU during off-hours and weekends as required, ensuring continued high-quality care.
  • Family and Patient Communication:
    • Provide clear communication to patients’ families regarding the patient’s condition, treatment options, and prognosis.
    • Offer emotional support to patients’ families in difficult or end-of-life situations.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educational Requirements:
    • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
    • Postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine or a related field (e.g., MD, DNB, MRCP).
    • Fellowship or specialized training in Critical Care Medicine or Intensive Care (e.g., FCCS, Fellowship in Critical Care).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum Fresher to 3 years of experience post-specialization in critical care medicine.
    • Proven experience in managing patients with severe, life-threatening conditions and requiring advanced life support.
    • Hands-on experience in critical care procedures, including endotracheal intubation, central venous line insertion, mechanical ventilation, and hemodynamic monitoring.
