Job Summary:
The Associate Professor in Physiology is an academic role that involves delivering high-quality education in human physiology, conducting impactful research, and providing leadership within the Department of Physiology. The role includes responsibilities in teaching, curriculum development, research, student mentorship, and academic service. The individual will play a key role in advancing the understanding of physiological processes, contributing to the development of future healthcare professionals, and enhancing the department’s research profile.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching and Education:
- Lead and deliver lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in human physiology for medical, dental, nursing, and allied health science students.
- Design, implement, and continuously update the physiology curriculum to ensure it reflects current scientific advancements and educational practices.
- Supervise and guide students in laboratory work, helping them develop critical thinking and hands-on skills in experimental physiology.
- Develop innovative teaching methods, such as problem-based learning (PBL), case-based learning (CBL), flipped classrooms, and the use of simulation technologies, to enhance the learning experience.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations of student performance through written exams, lab reports, practical tests, and other assessment tools.
- Provide academic guidance and mentorship to students, addressing individual learning needs and promoting career development in the physiological sciences.
- Research and Scholarly Activities:
- Lead independent and collaborative research in physiology, with a focus on areas such as cellular physiology, systems physiology, pathophysiology, or integrative physiology.
- Supervise and mentor postgraduate students, medical students, and research staff on their research projects, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.
- Secure funding for research projects through grant writing and proposals to external funding bodies.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and present research at national and international conferences, contributing to the advancement of the field.
- Encourage and support students and junior faculty in developing their research skills and pursuing their own academic inquiries.
- Curriculum Development and Improvement:
- Actively contribute to the design and development of the physiology curriculum, ensuring it is aligned with educational standards, institutional goals, and current trends in medical education.
- Integrate technology into teaching and learning, utilizing digital platforms, virtual laboratories, and 3D simulation tools to enhance the student experience.
- Regularly review and update course materials to reflect new research, clinical advancements, and pedagogical innovations in physiology.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum, gather feedback from students, and make data-driven improvements to optimize educational outcomes.
- Student Mentorship and Academic Support:
- Provide academic mentorship and counseling to students, guiding them on their academic journey, research projects, and professional development.
- Offer additional support to students who may be struggling with course material, facilitating workshops or review sessions to address learning challenges.
- Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages critical thinking, student engagement, and academic achievement.
- Serve as a role model for students, promoting academic excellence, ethical research practices, and professional integrity.
- Departmental and Institutional Service:
- Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and initiatives aimed at advancing the goals of the Physiology Department and the institution.
- Contribute to the recruitment, evaluation, and professional development of junior faculty and staff members.
- Assist in the development of departmental policies, academic standards, and quality assurance measures for physiology education and research.
- Take an active role in the administration and coordination of physiology courses, including scheduling, exam preparation, and grading.
- Represent the department at institutional, national, and international academic forums, conferences, and committees.
- Professional Development:
- Continuously pursue professional development through attending workshops, conferences, and other activities related to physiology, medical education, and research.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in physiology, especially those relevant to medical education and healthcare.
- Engage in collaborations with external institutions, research bodies, and professional organizations to enhance knowledge and develop new academic and research partnerships.
Required Qualifications:
- Educational Qualifications:
- MBBS, MS/MD
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of teaching experience in physiology at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, with a proven track record of educational excellence.
- Significant experience in conducting research in physiology or related fields, with a strong record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, particularly in integrating modern teaching methods and technologies.
- Experience in supervising and mentoring graduate students, medical students, and junior faculty in research and academic activities.
