Associate Professor Physiology

Job Summary: The Associate Professor of Physiology is a senior academic position that involves teaching, research, and leadership in the Department of Physiology. This role requires a high level of expertise in physiological sciences, with responsibilities in course development, student mentorship, research leadership, and service to the department and institution. The Associate Professor will contribute to the academic reputation of the department by engaging in innovative teaching methods, conducting high-quality research, and leading departmental initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching & Instruction:
    • Deliver advanced lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in physiology, covering topics such as neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, cellular and molecular physiology, and pathophysiology.
    • Develop and continually update the curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate physiology courses to reflect the latest scientific advancements and teaching methodologies.
    • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students, guiding them in research, practical sessions, and academic development.
    • Lead and participate in the assessment of student performance through exams, practical evaluations, assignments, and projects, providing constructive feedback to foster student learning and success.
    • Engage in interdisciplinary teaching, collaborating with clinical departments to integrate physiological knowledge with clinical practice and healthcare education.
  2. Research & Scholarly Activities:
    • Lead and conduct independent, high-impact research in physiology, focusing on areas such as experimental physiology, cellular mechanisms, neurophysiology, or clinical applications of physiological principles.
    • Publish research findings in leading, peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field.
    • Seek and obtain external research funding through grants from government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector organizations.
    • Supervise postgraduate students and junior researchers, providing mentorship and guidance for their research projects, helping them to achieve academic and research goals.
    • Foster interdisciplinary research collaborations within and outside the institution, promoting a productive and innovative research environment.
  3. Departmental Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Participate in the strategic development of the department, including academic planning, curriculum development, and the enhancement of teaching methodologies.
    • Take leadership roles within the department, such as course coordination, committee leadership, or overseeing research initiatives.
    • Assist in the recruitment, development, and mentoring of new faculty members and residents, helping to integrate them into the department’s teaching and research activities.
    • Contribute to the administration and maintenance of physiology laboratories, ensuring their suitability for teaching and research.
    • Participate in departmental and institutional governance, attending meetings, contributing to departmental reviews, and helping to shape policies related to teaching, research, and professional development.
  4. Clinical Integration & Teaching:
    • Collaborate with clinical departments to integrate physiology teaching into clinical settings, helping students understand how physiological principles apply to patient care and disease management.
    • Participate in clinical case discussions, bedside teaching, and other clinical teaching activities to enhance students’ understanding of physiology in a real-world healthcare context.
    • Contribute to the development of clinical skills programs, helping students connect their physiological knowledge to clinical practice.
  5. Professional Development & Service:
    • Stay abreast of the latest research, trends, and advancements in physiology, medical education, and healthcare.
    • Engage in continuous professional development by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences to further develop academic and teaching skills.
    • Represent the department and institution at academic conferences, professional organizations, and research symposia.
    • Contribute to service activities within the institution, such as faculty development programs, mentorship of junior faculty, and participation in academic committees.
  6. Supervision & Mentorship:
    • Supervise, guide, and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students involved in research projects, fostering a productive academic environment.
    • Provide mentorship to junior faculty, guiding them in their teaching, research, and professional development within the department.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Ph.D. in Physiology or a related field, with a strong focus on research in physiological sciences.
    • Medical degree (M.B.B.S.) with specialization in physiology is an advantage.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of teaching experience at the university level, with a demonstrated record of academic excellence and research in physiology.
