Position Summary:
The Associate Professor of Neurosurgery is a senior academic surgeon responsible for teaching, clinical practice, research, and academic leadership in the field of neurosurgery. The role includes mentoring junior faculty and residents, performing advanced neurosurgical procedures, conducting research, and contributing to the development of the neurosurgery curriculum and department.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Teaching and Academic Duties
- Deliver lectures, case discussions, and surgical demonstrations for undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MCh/ DNB) students.
- Supervise clinical training and surgical rotations of residents and fellows.
- Participate in curriculum development, academic assessments, and examinations.
- Provide mentorship and career guidance to trainees and junior faculty.
2. Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures (cranial, spinal, neurovascular, pediatric, trauma, etc.).
- Oversee neurosurgery inpatient and outpatient care, including multidisciplinary rounds.
- Ensure best practices in patient safety, surgical ethics, and clinical quality standards.
- Participate in on-call neurosurgical coverage and consultation services.
3. Research and Scholarly Activity
- Conduct clinical and/or basic science research in neurosurgery or related neurosciences.
- Publish regularly in peer-reviewed national and international journals.
- Present research at neurosurgical and scientific conferences.
- Guide postgraduate dissertations and collaborative research projects.
- Apply for research funding and manage ongoing projects, if applicable.
4. Administrative and Leadership Roles
- Support the Head of Department in academic and clinical planning.
- Serve on institutional academic, ethics, or surgical audit committees.
- Contribute to faculty development and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Assist with departmental accreditations, quality control, and documentation processes.
Qualifications:
- Essential:
- MBBS with MCh or DNB in Neurosurgery from a recognized institution.
- Registered with the relevant Medical Council (NMC or equivalent national body).
- Minimum 5–7 years of teaching and clinical experience in neurosurgery, including at least 3 years as an Assistant Professor.
- Desirable:
- Subspecialty training (e.g., spine surgery, neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery).
- Strong record of publications and academic presentations.
- Experience in surgical simulation training or curriculum innovation.
