Job Description for Associate Professor in Microbiology

Clinical Responsibilities:

  1. Diagnostic Services:
    • Supervise and perform various microbiological diagnostic tests, including bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and immunology.
    • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of results to clinical teams.
    • Collaborate with clinicians to interpret microbiological data in the context of patient management.
  2. Infection Control:
    • Assist in the hospital’s infection control program by monitoring nosocomial infections and contributing to prevention strategies.
    • Participate in antibiotic stewardship programs to promote the rational use of antimicrobials.
  3. Lab Management:
    • Supervise the functioning of the microbiology lab, ensuring proper quality control and compliance with protocols.
    • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of equipment.
    • Train and oversee junior residents, technologists, and lab staff.
  4. Clinical Rounds:
    • Participate in clinical rounds with infection control teams, particularly in ICUs and high-risk areas, to provide microbiological insights.
    • Attend to consultations from various departments regarding microbial infections and antibiotic management.

Academic and Research Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Mentorship:
    • Mentor junior residents, medical students, and laboratory staff in microbiological techniques and the interpretation of results.
    • Organize and participate in academic sessions, journal clubs, and case discussions.
  2. Research:
    • Engage in clinical and laboratory-based research projects within the microbiology department.
    • Assist in data collection, analysis, and writing for publications.
    • Present research findings at conferences or departmental meetings.
  3. Continuing Education:
    • Stay updated on the latest developments in microbiology and infectious diseases.
    • Attend workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance professional knowledge.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Record Keeping and Documentation:
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of lab reports, infection control data, and research activities.
    • Manage stock of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  2. Liaison with Other Departments:
    • Act as a liaison between the microbiology lab and clinical departments, ensuring smooth communication regarding diagnostic needs and infection control protocols.
  3. Audits and Accreditation:
    • Assist in internal and external audits of the microbiology lab for accreditation purposes.
    • Ensure compliance with national and international standards.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • MD in Microbiology or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Good understanding of clinical microbiology, infection control, and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Experience in managing laboratory operations and quality control.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clinicians and other healthcare professionals.
