Job Summary: The Associate Professor of Microbiology is a senior academic position that involves leadership in teaching, research, and academic development within the microbiology department. The role encompasses delivering high-level educational instruction to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students, conducting and leading impactful research, mentoring junior faculty and students, and contributing to the advancement of the department’s academic and clinical goals. The Associate Professor will be expected to engage in collaborative research, foster innovative teaching practices, and provide expertise in clinical microbiology and infection control.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Design, deliver, and oversee undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate courses in microbiology, including areas such as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, immunology, and clinical microbiology.
- Develop, revise, and update course materials and curricula to ensure alignment with current scientific developments and clinical practices.
- Lead and facilitate interactive lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions, ensuring an engaging learning experience for students.
- Supervise and mentor students in laboratory settings, guiding them in the use of microbiological techniques and ensuring academic rigor.
- Evaluate student performance through exams, assignments, presentations, and research projects, providing constructive feedback.
- Advise students on academic and career matters, offering guidance on research, professional development, and future opportunities in microbiology.
- Provide oversight in the development of new teaching strategies, integrating modern educational technologies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Conduct and lead independent and collaborative research in microbiology, focusing on areas such as infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, molecular diagnostics, epidemiology, immunology, and public health microbiology.
- Seek research funding through grants and industry partnerships to support innovative research projects, laboratory resources, and academic development.
- Supervise and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty in their research activities, promoting high standards of scientific inquiry and integrity.
- Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and present research at national and international conferences to enhance the department’s reputation in the field.
- Foster a collaborative research environment by engaging with faculty, clinicians, and interdisciplinary teams to drive new research initiatives and innovations.
- Contribute to the development of research infrastructure, including laboratory facilities, technologies, and methodologies for advanced microbiological research.
- Clinical Microbiology & Infection Control:
- Provide clinical expertise in microbiology, including diagnostic testing, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Work closely with clinical teams in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of infectious diseases, providing insights into microbiological results and therapeutic interventions.
- Lead and collaborate with infection control teams to develop strategies for preventing hospital-acquired infections and optimizing infection control practices.
- Contribute to clinical microbiology rounds, offering recommendations on diagnostic procedures, pathogen identification, and appropriate antimicrobial use.
- Actively engage in antimicrobial stewardship programs, promoting the responsible use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents to combat resistance.
- Departmental Leadership & Service:
- Play an active leadership role in the development and advancement of the microbiology department, contributing to strategic planning, curriculum development, and departmental policy decisions.
- Serve on academic committees, participate in accreditation processes, and contribute to departmental decision-making and planning.
- Provide guidance on faculty development, helping junior faculty and researchers achieve their academic and professional goals.
- Assist with the recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff to maintain a diverse and high-performing department.
- Lead or support the organization of academic events, such as conferences, workshops, seminars, and symposia, to promote research, teaching, and professional development within the department.
- Maintain departmental records and reports, contributing to institutional reviews and audits as required.
- Mentorship & Academic Guidance:
- Mentor and support graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, helping them develop research proposals, grant applications, and academic publications.
- Provide career advice and academic guidance to students, helping them navigate career opportunities in academia, industry, or clinical settings.
- Supervise doctoral theses, research projects, and internships, ensuring high-quality research outputs.
- Encourage and support faculty development activities, such as teaching workshops, research collaborations, and leadership training.
- Community & Professional Engagement:
- Actively participate in professional organizations, including national and international microbiology associations, to stay informed of developments in the field.
- Represent the department at academic conferences, professional meetings, and public health initiatives, promoting the department’s research and teaching programs.
- Collaborate with public health organizations, government agencies, and industry partners on research projects and public health initiatives related to microbiology and infectious diseases.
- Engage in outreach activities to educate the community, healthcare professionals, and the public on microbiological topics, infection prevention, and public health issues.
- Professional Development:
- Engage in continuous professional development by attending relevant academic conferences, workshops, and other training opportunities to stay current with advances in microbiology, research methodologies, and pedagogical techniques.
- Contribute to academic journals by serving as a reviewer and submitting original research articles, reviews, and case studies.
- Mentor colleagues and contribute to the development of best practices in research and teaching within the department and institution.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, or a closely related field (M.D. with a specialization in clinical microbiology is also acceptable).
- Postdoctoral experience in microbiology, infectious diseases, or a related research area is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of teaching experience at the university level, with a demonstrated ability to deliver lectures, design curricula, and mentor students in microbiology and related fields.
