Vacancy for Associate Professor Microbiology

Job Summary: The Associate Professor of Microbiology is a senior academic role responsible for teaching, research, and academic leadership in the field of microbiology. This role includes delivering high-quality instruction to undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting independent research, contributing to departmental development, and engaging in professional activities related to microbiology.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching & Instruction:
    • Deliver lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory sessions in microbiology to medical, dental, and other allied health students.
    • Develop and update the curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in microbiology, ensuring content is current and aligned with best practices in medical education.
    • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students during laboratory work, clinical placements, and research projects.
    • Conduct assessments, including written exams, practical exams, and viva voce, and provide constructive feedback to students.
    • Mentor students and junior faculty members, providing guidance on academic and research matters.
  2. Research & Scholarly Activity:
    • Conduct original research in microbiology, with a focus on infectious diseases, clinical microbiology, immunology, or related areas.
    • Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of microbiology.
    • Collaborate with other academic departments, hospitals, or research institutions on interdisciplinary research projects.
    • Secure research funding through grants, collaborations, and partnerships with government bodies, industry, and other research institutions.
    • Supervise and guide postgraduate research students (M.Sc., Ph.D.) and junior researchers.
  3. Clinical & Practical Training:
    • Provide clinical teaching in microbiology, including infectious diseases, diagnostic microbiology, and antimicrobial stewardship, in collaboration with clinical departments.
    • Participate in clinical rounds and case discussions to provide practical, real-world insights to students.
    • Ensure that laboratory sessions provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in microbiological techniques and diagnostics.
  4. Academic Leadership & Departmental Development:
    • Participate actively in departmental meetings and help in the strategic planning and development of the department’s goals and objectives.
    • Contribute to the development and improvement of departmental resources, such as teaching materials, laboratory facilities, and educational technology.
    • Serve on academic committees, review boards, and other institutional bodies.
    • Assist in the recruitment, training, and development of new faculty members and teaching staff.
    • Participate in accreditation activities, ensuring that the department meets academic and regulatory standards.
  5. Professional Engagement & Service:
    • Engage in professional activities such as attending conferences, presenting research findings, and participating in microbiology-related professional associations.
    • Provide expert advice and consultation in microbiology to the institution, healthcare providers, and the community.
    • Stay up to date with the latest advances in microbiology, infectious diseases, and related fields.
    • Promote and uphold the institution’s values and code of ethics in teaching, research, and community service.
  6. Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Assist with administrative duties, including course coordination, scheduling of practicals, examination preparation, and student evaluations.
    • Participate in university-wide activities, such as faculty development, curriculum committees, and student advisory roles.
    • Contribute to grant writing, fundraising, and other departmental initiatives.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Microbiology or a related field (e.g., Clinical Microbiology, Immunology).
    • A medical degree (M.B.B.S., M.D.) or equivalent with specialization in microbiology is an advantage.
  • Experience:
    • At least 5-7 years of teaching experience at the university level, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality education in microbiology.
