Associate Professor Forensic Medicine

Job Summary: The Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine is a senior academic and clinical position that involves leadership in teaching, research, and clinical practice within the department of forensic medicine. This role encompasses providing expert education to undergraduate and postgraduate students, performing and supervising autopsies, offering medico-legal consultations, and contributing to the advancement of the department’s research agenda. The Associate Professor is expected to have significant expertise in forensic pathology, medico-legal case management, and a commitment to improving the academic standards and clinical practices in forensic medicine.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching & Instruction:
    • Develop, deliver, and oversee undergraduate and postgraduate courses in forensic medicine, including lectures, seminars, and practical sessions on medico-legal case management, autopsy techniques, toxicology, and forensic pathology.
    • Update and enhance curriculum content to ensure alignment with current forensic medical practices and legal standards.
    • Supervise and mentor medical students, residents, and postgraduate students in forensic medicine, providing guidance on clinical practice, research, and professional development.
    • Evaluate student performance through exams, case presentations, and practical exercises, providing constructive feedback and supporting student success.
    • Foster an interactive and engaging learning environment, integrating modern teaching methods and technologies into the academic program.
    • Organize and participate in academic workshops, conferences, and symposia to enhance the department’s educational offerings and promote ongoing learning.
  2. Clinical & Forensic Consultations:
    • Provide expert medico-legal consultations on complex cases involving trauma, death, poisoning, sexual assault, and other criminal activities.
    • Conduct thorough forensic examinations, document findings, and ensure that all medico-legal documentation is legally sound and appropriate for judicial purposes.
    • Act as an expert witness in legal proceedings, offering professional testimony and presenting forensic medical evidence in court.
    • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, police, and legal professionals in criminal investigations, providing critical insights into forensic matters.
    • Provide advice on the preservation, handling, and documentation of evidence to ensure proper legal protocol is followed in forensic investigations.
  3. Autopsy & Postmortem Examination:
    • Lead and perform autopsies in complex and high-profile cases, determining cause of death and identifying any contributing factors such as trauma, disease, or toxicology.
    • Supervise the collection and analysis of forensic samples, including blood, tissue, and other fluids for toxicological and pathological testing.
    • Prepare detailed and clear autopsy reports, presenting findings in a manner suitable for legal purposes, and contributing to the investigation of suspicious deaths.
    • Ensure proper documentation of autopsy procedures and outcomes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  4. Research & Scholarly Activities:
    • Conduct original research in forensic medicine, with a focus on advancing knowledge in forensic pathology, toxicology, legal medicine, and the application of forensic sciences in criminal investigations.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present at national and international conferences, contributing to the academic and clinical reputation of the department.
    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on forensic research projects, working with pathologists, toxicologists, law enforcement, and legal professionals.
    • Secure research funding through grants, collaborations, and partnerships with government agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector.
    • Supervise and guide research projects by junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students, ensuring high-quality research output and contributing to the growth of the department.
  5. Departmental Leadership & Administration:
    • Contribute to the academic leadership of the forensic medicine department by helping shape the department’s strategic direction, teaching goals, and research initiatives.
    • Participate in departmental committees, contributing to curriculum development, student affairs, accreditation processes, and overall departmental management.
    • Assist in the recruitment, retention, and professional development of faculty and staff within the department, providing mentorship and support for junior colleagues.
    • Develop policies and guidelines for the department on issues related to forensic medical practice, medico-legal investigations, and ethical standards.
    • Assist in the organization of departmental academic events, such as workshops, conferences, and seminars, to enhance the department’s visibility and reputation in the academic and professional community.
  6. Mentorship & Professional Development:
    • Mentor postgraduate students, residents, and junior faculty in their clinical practice, research, and academic development.
    • Provide career guidance to students and junior faculty, helping them navigate opportunities in forensic medicine, academia, and professional practice.
    • Promote professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, including attending national and international forensic medicine conferences, workshops, and seminars.
    • Foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment within the department, encouraging continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing among colleagues.
  7. Community & Public Engagement:
    • Represent the department in professional organizations and public forums, engaging with the broader forensic medicine and legal communities.
    • Participate in outreach activities to educate the public, law enforcement, and healthcare professionals about forensic medicine, crime scene investigations, and medico-legal procedures.
    • Contribute to community education on issues related to forensic pathology, crime prevention, and public health, leveraging media or public speaking engagements.
  8. Administrative Support:
    • Ensure the proper functioning of forensic medicine facilities, including laboratories, autopsy rooms, and clinical areas, maintaining appropriate health and safety standards.
    • Maintain detailed records of all medico-legal investigations, including autopsies, consultations, and case evaluations, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
    • Prepare reports for institutional reviews, accreditation bodies, and other regulatory agencies related to the forensic medicine program.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education:
    • M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent medical degree.
    • M.D. or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Forensic Medicine or a related field.
    • Additional training or certification in forensic pathology, toxicology, or legal medicine is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • At least 5-7 years of experience in forensic medicine, including significant clinical experience in performing autopsies, providing medico-legal consultations, and presenting expert testimony.
