Job Summary: The Associate Professor of Biochemistry is a senior academic position responsible for leading teaching and research initiatives in the Biochemistry department. This role involves providing high-quality education to undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting original research, and contributing to the academic and administrative development of the department. The Associate Professor will mentor junior faculty members, lead research projects, and foster collaboration within and outside the institution to enhance the department’s academic reputation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and practical sessions to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in biochemistry, covering topics such as molecular biology, enzymology, metabolic biochemistry, and clinical applications.
- Design, develop, and update curriculum and instructional materials to ensure they reflect current trends in biochemistry and advances in scientific research.
- Supervise laboratory sessions, guiding students through experiments and ensuring safety and accuracy in biochemical analyses.
- Assess student performance through written exams, practical assessments, research projects, and provide constructive feedback to support their academic growth.
- Mentor and advise students on academic and research matters, providing guidance on their career development and research projects.
- Participate in interdisciplinary teaching, integrating biochemistry with clinical applications, medical education, and other relevant fields.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Conduct independent, high-impact research in biochemistry, focusing on areas such as metabolic disorders, molecular genetics, clinical biochemistry, or biotechnology.
- Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field.
- Lead collaborative research efforts within the department and across disciplines, seeking funding from research grants and external sources.
- Supervise and mentor postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior researchers, guiding them through research projects and career development.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences, contributing to the department’s visibility and reputation in the scientific community.
- Foster a collaborative research environment that promotes innovative approaches and the exploration of emerging topics in biochemistry.
- Departmental Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities:
- Take a leadership role in the academic development of the department, contributing to strategic planning, curriculum design, and the integration of new teaching technologies.
- Participate in the recruitment, evaluation, and professional development of faculty, staff, and research assistants within the department.
- Serve on various departmental committees, contributing to academic governance and policy development.
- Assist with the administration and management of biochemistry labs and research facilities, ensuring they are adequately equipped and maintained.
- Support the department’s efforts to improve teaching standards, research output, and student engagement.
- Play a role in academic program reviews, accreditation processes, and curriculum improvements.
- Clinical Integration & Collaborative Teaching:
- Collaborate with clinical departments to integrate biochemistry into clinical training, providing students with an understanding of the biochemical aspects of disease, diagnosis, and patient care.
- Contribute to clinical rounds and case discussions, linking biochemical concepts to real-world medical practices.
- Help in the development of clinical skills programs by incorporating biochemistry into teaching modules for clinical students.
- Professional Development & Service:
- Engage in continuous professional development through attending academic conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay updated on the latest developments in biochemistry and medical education.
- Contribute to professional organizations, associations, and scientific committees, representing the department and promoting its research and educational goals.
- Actively participate in outreach activities that promote the department, including hosting workshops, giving guest lectures, and engaging with external stakeholders.
- Contribute to departmental and institutional service, including mentoring junior faculty, advising students, and helping with university-wide initiatives.
- Supervision & Mentorship:
- Supervise and mentor postgraduate students and junior faculty, supporting their research endeavors and guiding their academic career paths.
- Provide regular feedback on research progress, guiding students and early-career faculty through the research process, including experimental design, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation.
- Foster a collegial and supportive environment for teaching, research, and collaboration, encouraging the professional development of all department members.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a related field (M.D. with a specialization in biochemistry is also considered).
- Postdoctoral experience in biochemistry or a related field is highly desirable.
- Experience:
- A minimum of 5-7 years of teaching experience at the university level, with a track record of academic leadership and research.
