Job Summary: The Associate Professor of Anatomy is a senior academic role responsible for teaching, research, curriculum development, and departmental leadership. The individual in this position will be expected to deliver high-quality education in human anatomy, lead research initiatives, mentor junior faculty and students, and contribute to the academic growth and reputation of the department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in various areas of human anatomy, including gross anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy, and embryology to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Supervise and guide students during cadaveric dissections, histological lab work, and other anatomy-related practicals.
- Develop and update the curriculum for anatomy courses to ensure it reflects contemporary knowledge and best practices in medical education.
- Conduct formative and summative assessments, including written exams, practical assessments, and vivas, providing timely and constructive feedback to students.
- Mentor and provide academic guidance to students, including assisting with research projects, thesis development, and career advice.
- Research & Scholarly Activity:
- Lead and conduct independent, high-quality research in anatomy or related fields (such as clinical anatomy, anatomical education, or molecular anatomy).
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals, contribute to academic conferences, and present findings to advance knowledge in anatomy.
- Apply for and secure external research funding from governmental and non-governmental organizations.
- Supervise and guide postgraduate research students (M.Sc., Ph.D.) and junior faculty members involved in research projects.
- Collaborate with colleagues in interdisciplinary research to promote innovation and academic excellence within and outside the department.
- Departmental Leadership & Administration:
- Contribute to the strategic development of the Anatomy Department by participating in academic planning, course design, and departmental reviews.
- Take on leadership roles in the department, such as coordinating courses, managing laboratory resources, and leading departmental committees.
- Help develop and maintain anatomical laboratories, cadaveric specimens, and teaching resources to ensure a high standard of teaching and research.
- Assist in the recruitment and training of new faculty members, ensuring they are integrated into the department’s culture and teaching activities.
- Oversee the smooth operation of anatomy-related academic activities, including course scheduling, examination coordination, and curriculum assessments.
- Clinical & Practical Training:
- Engage in interdisciplinary teaching with clinical departments to link anatomical theory with clinical practice, particularly in subjects like surgical anatomy and radiological anatomy.
- Contribute to clinical training, such as teaching anatomy in clinical case discussions, helping students apply anatomical knowledge in real-world settings.
- Promote the integration of new teaching technologies, such as 3D anatomy software, virtual dissections, and simulation-based learning.
- Professional Engagement & Service:
- Stay current with the latest developments in anatomy, medical education, and research methodologies.
- Participate in professional associations and societies related to anatomy, education, and healthcare, and represent the department in academic forums and conferences.
- Promote the department and institution through outreach activities, public lectures, and collaboration with external institutions.
- Contribute to the professional development of faculty members by sharing expertise and mentoring junior faculty.
- Administrative Responsibilities:
- Participate in departmental meetings, contribute to strategic planning, and assist in accreditation activities to maintain academic standards.
- Manage administrative tasks, such as preparing and reviewing course syllabi, maintaining student records, and coordinating academic evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines in teaching, research, and the use of cadaveric specimens and teaching materials.
- Collaborate with other academic departments to foster interdepartmental initiatives and student learning opportunities.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Ph.D., M.D., or M.S. in Anatomy, or a related field. Additional specialization in clinical anatomy or surgical anatomy is advantageous.
- Medical degree (M.B.B.S.) with specialization in anatomy is a plus.
- Experience:
- At least 5-7 years of experience in teaching anatomy at the university or medical school level.
