Job Summary:
The Associate Professor in General Surgery is responsible for providing high-quality education, clinical training, and research in the field of general surgery. This position involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervising residents, engaging in direct patient care, performing surgical procedures, and contributing to academic research. The role also includes the development of educational materials and curricula and active participation in the clinical and administrative responsibilities of the department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Education:
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials on general surgery topics, including surgical techniques, preoperative and postoperative care, emergency surgery, and surgical oncology.
- Supervise and mentor undergraduate medical students and postgraduate residents in clinical rotations, ensuring hands-on training in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Develop and update educational resources and materials such as case studies, practical exercises, and digital learning platforms.
- Assess students and residents through exams, clinical evaluations, and assignments, providing constructive feedback to facilitate learning.
- Lead and coordinate practical training sessions, surgical demonstrations, and simulations to enhance students’ and residents’ hands-on skills.
- Contribute to the continuous development and review of the general surgery curriculum to meet current medical standards and incorporate new advancements.
- Clinical Practice:
- Provide high-quality clinical care, including performing a variety of general surgery procedures such as appendectomies, hernia repairs, laparotomies, and surgeries for trauma, gastrointestinal diseases, and cancer.
- Conduct preoperative and postoperative evaluations and provide comprehensive care for patients undergoing surgical treatments.
- Lead surgical teams in performing surgeries, ensuring adherence to best practices in patient safety and surgical techniques.
- Provide leadership in the management of complex cases and participate in multidisciplinary discussions for patient management.
- Participate in emergency surgery services, handling cases that require urgent intervention or trauma care.
- Provide consultations for other departments requiring surgical expertise and collaborate with other medical specialties to ensure holistic care.
- Research:
- Engage in independent and collaborative research projects in general surgery, focusing on topics such as surgical techniques, innovations in patient care, post-operative care, and surgical outcomes.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed medical journals and present at national and international conferences.
- Mentor residents, fellows, and medical students in research activities, guiding them through study design, data collection, analysis, and manuscript writing.
- Seek and manage research funding, ensuring compliance with institutional and ethical guidelines.
- Participate in the design, implementation, and publication of clinical trials and surgical studies aimed at improving surgical practices and patient care.
- Curriculum Development:
- Contribute to the development, review, and improvement of the general surgery curriculum for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
- Ensure that the curriculum aligns with the latest advancements in surgical techniques, patient safety, and medical standards.
- Use innovative teaching methods such as problem-based learning (PBL), simulation-based learning, and interactive case discussions to engage students.
- Regularly review and update training materials to incorporate new technologies and techniques in general surgery.
- Professional Development:
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in general surgery, surgical techniques, and patient care by attending workshops, seminars, and continuing medical education (CME) programs.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance clinical skills, teaching abilities, and research expertise.
- Encourage the professional growth of junior faculty, residents, and medical students by providing guidance, mentorship, and opportunities for skill development.
- Administrative Duties:
- Participate in departmental meetings, academic committees, and institutional planning, contributing to the growth and development of the General Surgery department.
- Assist in the organization of departmental activities, including conferences, workshops, and educational programs.
- Ensure that clinical practices and educational activities adhere to institutional policies, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines.
- Contribute to the preparation of reports, audits, and institutional assessments related to the General Surgery department.
- Participate in the development of departmental strategies for improving patient care, surgical outcomes, and teaching methods.
