Job Description for Assistant Professor in Forensic Medicine

Medico-Legal Responsibilities:

  1. Autopsy and Postmortem Examinations:
    • Conduct and supervise autopsies, including medico-legal and clinical postmortems, under the guidance of senior faculty.
    • Prepare detailed autopsy reports, including cause of death, time of death, and any injury analysis.
    • Assist law enforcement agencies by providing expert forensic opinions.
  2. Medico-Legal Case Evaluation:
    • Examine and evaluate medico-legal cases, such as cases of homicide, suicide, accidents, or unknown causes of death.
    • Assist in the evaluation of injury certificates, sexual assault cases, and other forensic evaluations related to crime scenes.
    • Document and maintain accurate medico-legal records, including injuries, causes, and mechanisms.
  3. Court Attendance and Testimony:
    • Appear in court as an expert witness when required, presenting medico-legal findings in a clear and professional manner.
    • Prepare medico-legal reports to be used in court proceedings, including reports on autopsies, toxicology, and other forensic analyses.
  4. Crime Scene Investigation:
    • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies during crime scene investigations by offering forensic expertise.
    • Assist in the collection and analysis of evidence, such as biological samples, weapons, and environmental data.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Forensic Medicine:
    • Provide clinical forensic services such as age estimation, examination of victims of physical and sexual assault, and assessment of mental health in medico-legal cases.
    • Supervise the forensic examination of living subjects, including documentation of injuries in medico-legal cases.
  2. Toxicology:
    • Assist in conducting toxicological investigations to identify drugs, poisons, or other substances in biological specimens.
    • Prepare reports on toxicological findings and interpret them in a medico-legal context.

Academic and Research Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Training:
    • Teach and mentor junior residents, medical students, and interns in forensic medicine and medico-legal procedures.
    • Participate in academic activities such as case discussions, seminars, and journal clubs.
    • Conduct mock trials or medico-legal case presentations to enhance training in forensic medicine.
  2. Research and Publications:
    • Engage in research activities related to forensic medicine, pathology, toxicology, and related fields.
    • Collaborate on research projects aimed at improving forensic investigation techniques.
    • Publish research findings in academic journals and present at national and international conferences.
  3. Continuing Medical Education (CME):
    • Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay updated on the latest developments in forensic medicine, forensic pathology, and medico-legal systems.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Documentation and Record Management:
    • Ensure thorough and accurate documentation of medico-legal cases, including autopsy reports, toxicology results, and forensic evidence.
    • Maintain medico-legal records for institutional and legal purposes.
  2. Collaboration with Law Enforcement and Legal Authorities:
    • Work closely with police, judiciary, and legal authorities to ensure proper handling of forensic cases.
    • Liaise with other hospital departments for multidisciplinary involvement in forensic cases, such as radiology, toxicology, and pathology.
  3. Audit and Quality Control:
    • Participate in regular audits of forensic cases to ensure compliance with legal and medical standards.
    • Assist in maintaining the quality and accuracy of forensic medicine services in line with regulatory requirements.

Skills and Qualifications Required:

  • MD in Forensic Medicine or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of medico-legal procedures, forensic pathology, and toxicology.
  • Ability to conduct and supervise autopsies and prepare detailed reports.
  • Experience in courtroom testimony and presenting medico-legal evidence.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills for medico-legal reporting.
