Assistant Professor Physiology

Job Summary:

The Assistant Professor in Physiology is a faculty position responsible for teaching and research in the field of human physiology. The individual will engage in providing high-quality education to medical, dental, and allied health science students, contribute to the development of academic programs, and actively participate in research to advance the understanding of physiological processes. This role involves delivering lectures, leading laboratory sessions, mentoring students, and contributing to the academic and research environment of the department.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Education:
    • Deliver lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions in human physiology to undergraduate and postgraduate students (e.g., medical, dental, nursing, and allied health science programs).
    • Develop and update course content and teaching materials to ensure they reflect the most current understanding of physiological principles and teaching methods.
    • Supervise students in practical and laboratory sessions, guiding them in experimental techniques, data analysis, and the application of physiological concepts.
    • Assess and evaluate student progress through written exams, practical assessments, assignments, and interactive learning activities.
    • Provide academic support and guidance to students, addressing questions, clarifying concepts, and offering help with difficult topics.
  2. Research and Scholarly Activities:
    • Conduct and lead research in physiology, focusing on areas such as cellular physiology, systems physiology, integrative physiology, or pathophysiology.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and contribute to advancing the field of physiology.
    • Supervise and mentor postgraduate students, medical students, and research assistants in their research projects, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.
    • Seek external funding opportunities for research and contribute to grant writing efforts.
  3. Curriculum Development and Improvement:
    • Actively participate in curriculum design, development, and review to ensure the physiology program is up-to-date, evidence-based, and aligned with the latest advances in physiology and educational practices.
    • Integrate modern teaching tools and technologies (e.g., virtual labs, simulation software) into the physiology curriculum to enhance the learning experience.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of innovative teaching methods, including flipped classrooms, problem-based learning, and interactive case-based discussions.
  4. Student Mentorship and Academic Support:
    • Mentor students in their academic progress, provide career guidance, and encourage students to pursue research in physiology and related fields.
    • Offer additional academic support to struggling students, facilitating their understanding of complex physiological concepts.
    • Foster a positive and stimulating learning environment that encourages student engagement and critical thinking.
  5. Departmental and Institutional Service:
    • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and academic activities to help shape the development and growth of the Physiology Department.
    • Assist in managing departmental responsibilities, including course coordination, exam preparation, grading, and student advising.
    • Contribute to the institution’s academic and research goals through collaborative projects, interdisciplinary initiatives, and service to the community.
    • Ensure adherence to institutional policies, ethical guidelines, and safety standards in laboratory and research activities.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Stay current with developments in the field of physiology, particularly in areas relevant to medical education, health sciences, and medical research.
    • Participate in professional development activities, such as attending workshops, conferences, and courses related to physiology and education.
    • Engage in ongoing self-directed learning and continue building expertise in specialized areas of physiology.

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Qualifications:
    • MBBS, MS/MD
  • Experience:
    • At least 2-3 years of teaching experience in physiology at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.
    • Experience in conducting research in physiology or a related field, with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Experience in supervising laboratory sessions and practical activities, guiding students in experimental research.
