Job Summary: The Assistant Professor of Physiology is responsible for teaching, research, and academic leadership in the field of physiology. This role involves delivering lectures and practical sessions to undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting independent research, contributing to the academic development of the department, and engaging in departmental service and professional activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Deliver high-quality lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions in basic and advanced physiology, including cellular physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, and other relevant areas.
- Develop and update curriculum materials for undergraduate and postgraduate physiology courses to ensure they align with current scientific advancements and educational trends.
- Supervise and mentor students in practical laboratory sessions, providing hands-on experience and guidance in understanding physiological principles.
- Assess students’ academic performance through exams, quizzes, assignments, and practical assessments, providing constructive feedback to foster learning and academic development.
- Participate in interdisciplinary teaching activities in collaboration with other departments, particularly clinical departments, to bridge the gap between physiology and clinical medicine.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Conduct original research in physiology, with a focus on areas such as cellular biology, systemic physiology, pathophysiology, or translational medicine.
- Publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals and present at academic conferences to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in physiology.
- Apply for and manage research funding through grants from government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students involved in research projects, providing guidance and mentorship throughout their academic journey.
- Collaborate with faculty members and researchers from other departments and institutions on interdisciplinary research projects.
- Departmental Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the physiology curriculum, ensuring it remains relevant, innovative, and aligned with the goals of the institution.
- Assist in the coordination of course materials, lab scheduling, and other administrative tasks related to teaching.
- Participate in departmental meetings, academic planning, and other initiatives that contribute to the growth and success of the department.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of laboratory facilities, ensuring they are well-equipped for teaching and research purposes.
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and mentoring of new faculty members and residents in the department.
- Clinical & Practical Teaching:
- Integrate physiology teaching with clinical practice by collaborating with clinical departments to apply physiological principles in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
- Participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, and interdisciplinary teaching, helping students understand how physiological knowledge is applied in real-world healthcare settings.
- Contribute to the development of clinical skills labs, incorporating physiology-based teaching into clinical training.
- Professional Engagement & Service:
- Stay updated with the latest developments in the field of physiology, including new research methodologies, educational technologies, and clinical applications.
- Participate in professional organizations and societies related to physiology, education, and healthcare, contributing to academic and professional networks.
- Represent the department and institution at academic conferences, workshops, and seminars to enhance the reputation of the department and foster collaborations.
- Provide service to the institution by participating in committees, faculty development programs, and other academic or administrative functions.
- Supervision & Mentorship:
- Mentor and supervise students and junior faculty members, providing guidance on research, teaching, and academic development.
- Encourage a collaborative and supportive learning environment for students, fostering their academic and professional growth.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Ph.D., M.D., or M.S. in Physiology or a related field.
- Medical degree (M.B.B.S.) with a focus on physiology is an advantage.
- Experience:
- At least 2-3 years of teaching experience in physiology at the university or medical school level.
