Job Summary: The Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG) is an academic position responsible for providing high-quality education and clinical care in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology. The role involves teaching, conducting clinical practice, supervising medical students, residents, and interns, engaging in clinical research, and contributing to the development of academic and clinical initiatives within the department. The Assistant Professor will also play a significant role in advancing patient care standards and academic excellence within the institution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Education:
- Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and practical training sessions on obstetrics, gynecology, and related medical fields to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Supervise medical students, residents, and interns during their clinical rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, guiding them through the diagnosis, management, and treatment of various conditions.
- Conduct clinical rounds, bedside teaching, and workshops on surgical techniques, obstetric care, gynecological procedures, and prenatal/postnatal care.
- Design, implement, and assess educational curricula for medical students and residents to ensure they meet academic and clinical standards.
- Evaluate students’ academic progress through written exams, oral assessments, and practical evaluations, providing feedback to help them improve.
- Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide patient care in both obstetrics and gynecology, including routine gynecological exams, prenatal and postnatal care, labor and delivery management, and surgical interventions.
- Manage a variety of obstetric conditions such as prenatal care, labor, delivery, postpartum care, and complications like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc.
- Perform gynecological surgeries, including cesarean sections, hysterectomies, laparotomies, and minimally invasive procedures, both independently and as part of a surgical team.
- Provide consultative services for complex gynecological conditions such as infertility, menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, and endometriosis.
- Ensure comprehensive management of high-risk pregnancies, including regular monitoring, diagnosis, and intervention when necessary.
- Supervise the care of patients in the delivery room, manage deliveries, and take responsibility for the well-being of mothers and newborns.
- Participate in on-call duties and emergencies related to obstetrics and gynecology.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Lead and engage in clinical and translational research projects focusing on improving patient outcomes in obstetrics and gynecology, such as maternal health, surgical techniques, and fertility treatments.
- Publish original research, case reports, and review articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the field’s body of knowledge.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences, enhancing the institution’s reputation in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
- Mentor residents, medical students, and junior faculty in research initiatives, assisting with research design, data analysis, and publication.
- Apply for research funding and grants from medical organizations, government bodies, and industry sources.
- Leadership & Departmental Contribution:
- Actively contribute to the leadership of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, participating in departmental meetings, committees, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with faculty members on curriculum development, academic planning, and creating educational materials for students and residents.
- Participate in the development and revision of departmental guidelines, clinical protocols, and standards of care, ensuring they are evidence-based and patient-centered.
- Assist in organizing departmental events such as workshops, seminars, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs, enhancing the educational experience for students and professionals.
- Promote a culture of teamwork and professionalism, fostering positive relationships within the department and with other healthcare teams.
- Patient Care & Consultation:
- Provide compassionate, patient-centered care to women across all stages of life, including reproductive health, pregnancy, labor, postnatal care, and menopause.
- Offer preconception counseling, family planning advice, and health promotion services for women’s well-being.
- Conduct routine screenings, including cervical and breast cancer screenings, and educate patients on preventive health measures.
- Counsel patients on various gynecological issues such as menopause, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Provide post-operative care and follow-up, ensuring patient recovery and providing support for any complications.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with the latest advancements in obstetrics and gynecology, including new treatments, surgical techniques, and clinical research findings.
- Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs, workshops, and conferences to maintain up-to-date knowledge and professional certifications.
- Engage in professional networking with colleagues in the field to exchange knowledge and collaborate on research projects.
- Participate in self-reflection and seek opportunities for improving clinical, teaching, and research skills.
- Administrative Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, complying with institutional and regulatory standards.
- Contribute to the preparation of departmental reports, audits, and assessments to maintain accreditation and high standards of patient care.
- Assist in managing departmental schedules, coordinating faculty and resident activities, and ensuring smooth functioning of clinical rotations.
- Support the recruitment and training of new faculty members and residents within the department.
- Manage and oversee teaching materials, exam papers, and course evaluations for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Community Engagement & Health Promotion:
- Engage in community outreach activities to promote women’s health, including family planning, prenatal care, and cancer prevention.
- Participate in public health campaigns to raise awareness about reproductive health, pregnancy-related complications, and women’s rights.
- Contribute to the development of educational materials and resources aimed at improving health literacy in the local community.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- M.B.B.S. or equivalent medical degree.
- Postgraduate degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MD, DNB, or equivalent).
- Certification in laparoscopic surgery or other subspecialties (preferred).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in obstetrics and gynecology following completion of postgraduate training.
