Job Summary: The Assistant Professor of Microbiology is responsible for teaching, research, and academic leadership within the microbiology department. This position involves delivering high-quality educational instruction to undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting and publishing original research, and contributing to the growth and development of the department. The Assistant Professor will be expected to actively engage in clinical microbiology, laboratory work, and serve as a mentor to students, junior faculty, and research teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Deliver engaging lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory sessions in microbiology to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Teach a wide range of microbiology topics, including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, immunology, and clinical microbiology.
- Develop, update, and enhance course content, curricula, and teaching materials to reflect current developments in the field of microbiology.
- Supervise and guide students during laboratory work, helping them develop hands-on skills and a deeper understanding of microbiological techniques.
- Evaluate student performance through examinations, assignments, lab reports, and presentations, providing constructive feedback to ensure academic growth.
- Advise students on academic and career-related matters, providing mentorship and guidance for research projects and professional development.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research in microbiology, focusing on areas such as infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, molecular diagnostics, epidemiology, and public health microbiology.
- Publish research findings in reputable, peer-reviewed scientific journals and present research at national and international academic conferences.
- Develop and lead research projects, manage research teams, and supervise graduate and doctoral students in their research activities.
- Secure funding for research activities by writing grant proposals and applying for research grants from government agencies, private organizations, and other funding bodies.
- Stay current with the latest developments and innovations in microbiology and related disciplines to enhance the quality and impact of research.
- Clinical Microbiology & Patient Care:
- Participate in clinical microbiology activities, including providing expertise on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of infectious diseases.
- Work closely with healthcare teams to optimize laboratory diagnostic procedures and clinical treatments for infectious diseases.
- Provide clinical consultations, including antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and control measures.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of infection control programs in collaboration with hospital or institutional infection control teams.
- Departmental Contribution & Leadership:
- Actively contribute to the development and enhancement of the microbiology department, including participating in curriculum planning, academic discussions, and departmental committees.
- Assist in the development and review of departmental policies, teaching practices, and research objectives.
- Collaborate with other faculty members to foster an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research in microbiology.
- Support the organization of departmental events such as seminars, workshops, conferences, and symposia to promote academic and professional development.
- Laboratory Management:
- Ensure that laboratory resources, including equipment, reagents, and supplies, are well-maintained, functional, and stocked.
- Oversee laboratory safety and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for students and staff.
- Guide students and researchers in the use of laboratory equipment and techniques, ensuring proficiency in microbial culture, diagnostic tests, and other microbiological methods.
- Assist in the development and validation of new laboratory protocols and diagnostic tests for detecting infectious diseases.
- Mentorship & Academic Service:
- Supervise and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty members, offering guidance on research projects, professional development, and career planning.
- Provide academic advising to students, helping them navigate course selection, research opportunities, and career pathways in microbiology and related fields.
- Contribute to the academic service of the department and university by participating in committees, student selection processes, and program evaluations.
- Provide guidance to students on the preparation of research papers, theses, and dissertations, ensuring high academic standards.
- Professional Development:
- Engage in continuous professional development by attending academic conferences, workshops, and training sessions to stay current with new trends in microbiology, pedagogy, and research.
- Collaborate with national and international experts to foster research networks and keep up-to-date with advances in microbiological research.
- Participate in professional organizations, contribute to peer-reviewed journals, and act as a reviewer for scientific publications in microbiology.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field (M.D. with a specialization in microbiology or clinical microbiology is also acceptable).
- Postdoctoral experience in microbiology, infectious diseases, or related research is preferred.
- Experience:
- At least 2-3 years of teaching experience in microbiology or a related field at the university level, including delivering lectures, conducting laboratory sessions, and mentoring students.
