Assistant Professor General Surgery

Job Summary: The Assistant Professor of General Surgery is an academic position responsible for providing high-quality medical education, engaging in clinical practice, and contributing to research activities in the field of general surgery. The Assistant Professor will deliver lectures, conduct surgical procedures, supervise medical students and residents, and participate in academic, clinical, and research initiatives. The role is focused on enhancing the educational experience of students, improving patient care through clinical practice, and advancing medical knowledge in general surgery.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching & Education:
    • Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in general surgery for medical students, residents, and interns, covering both basic and advanced concepts in surgery.
    • Supervise and mentor medical students, junior residents, and interns during their clinical rotations in the general surgery department.
    • Guide students and residents in the development of essential clinical skills, including history-taking, examination, diagnosis, surgical techniques, and patient management.
    • Conduct surgical demonstrations and assist in practical training for medical students and surgical residents, emphasizing sterile techniques, surgical anatomy, and patient safety.
    • Participate in academic activities such as case discussions, seminars, and journal clubs, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
    • Assess students’ progress, including practical exams, oral exams, and written assessments, providing constructive feedback.
  2. Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Provide clinical care in general surgery, including outpatient consultations, preoperative evaluations, and postoperative management.
    • Perform a wide range of elective and emergency surgeries, including laparotomies, appendectomies, hernia repairs, cholecystectomies, and other common procedures.
    • Lead and participate in surgical teams, performing surgeries as the primary surgeon or assisting in more complex cases.
    • Oversee the care of patients in inpatient settings, including post-surgical management, wound care, and monitoring for complications.
    • Participate in on-call rotations, providing surgical consultations and performing emergency surgeries as necessary.
    • Ensure the implementation of evidence-based practices in surgery, focusing on patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes.
    • Educate and counsel patients and their families on surgical procedures, recovery processes, and post-operative care.
  3. Research & Scholarly Activities:
    • Engage in clinical research to advance the understanding of surgical practices, outcomes, and innovations in general surgery.
    • Conduct research projects on various aspects of general surgery, including surgical techniques, patient outcomes, and advancements in minimally invasive surgery.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at academic conferences, and contribute to the body of knowledge in the field of surgery.
    • Encourage and mentor residents and students in conducting clinical research, assisting them in developing research proposals, and guiding them through the research process.
    • Seek funding opportunities for research, including grants from medical organizations, institutions, and industry partners.
  4. Leadership & Departmental Contribution:
    • Actively participate in departmental meetings, surgical grand rounds, and institutional committees.
    • Contribute to the development of departmental policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines aimed at improving patient care and surgical practices.
    • Assist in organizing and leading academic events, such as workshops, conferences, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs, to enhance the educational experience for residents and medical students.
    • Participate in quality improvement activities within the department, including reviewing patient outcomes, implementing best practices, and contributing to the accreditation process.
    • Support the department’s objectives and mission by collaborating with faculty and staff on educational, clinical, and research initiatives.
  5. Patient Care & Consultation:
    • Provide high-quality, patient-centered care for individuals requiring general surgery, from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.
    • Perform preoperative evaluations, ensuring that patients are fully prepared for surgery and that all risks are properly communicated.
    • Conduct postoperative rounds, monitor patient progress, and ensure that recovery is proceeding as expected, addressing any complications as they arise.
    • Counsel patients and their families on the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of surgery, providing support and answering questions about surgical procedures and recovery.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in general surgery, including new surgical techniques, technologies, and evidence-based practices.
    • Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities, workshops, and conferences to maintain clinical and teaching skills.
    • Engage in self-directed learning, reading surgical journals, and participating in online courses or other educational programs.
    • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in mentorship programs to improve teaching skills and enhance professional growth.
  7. Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in compliance with institutional and legal requirements.
    • Contribute to the preparation of reports, audits, and assessments related to the department’s academic and clinical activities.
    • Assist in the organization of departmental schedules, ensuring that clinical and academic responsibilities are efficiently managed.
    • Ensure proper documentation of procedures, surgeries, and patient care in electronic medical records (EMRs).
  8. Community Engagement & Health Promotion:
    • Participate in outreach programs to educate the community about surgical prevention, wellness, and healthcare practices.
    • Contribute to public health initiatives, such as health awareness campaigns on topics like cancer prevention, hernia management, or gastrointestinal health.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education:
    • M.B.B.S. or equivalent medical degree.
    • Postgraduate qualifications in General Surgery (MS, DNB, or equivalent).
    • Additional certifications in specialized surgical fields (e.g., laparoscopic surgery) are preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in general surgery after completing postgraduate training.
