Position Overview:
The Assistant Professor in General Medicine plays a crucial role in managing patient care, working in inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and intensive care units (ICUs). The Senior Resident assists in diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of medical conditions, from common illnesses to complex cases, while providing leadership and support to junior residents and medical students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive care to patients in the inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, emergency department, and ICU.
- Conduct thorough clinical assessments, take detailed histories, and perform physical examinations.
- Formulate differential diagnoses and treatment plans under the supervision of senior consultants.
- Prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and adjust treatment plans based on patient progress.
- Monitor critically ill patients in the ICU and manage emergency situations.
- Participate in ward rounds, case discussions, and interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Perform medical procedures such as lumbar punctures, central line insertions, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and others as required.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient records and treatment plans.
- Teaching and Supervision:
- Supervise and mentor junior residents, interns, and medical students during ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
- Teach clinical skills, diagnostic methods, and case management to junior doctors and students.
- Participate in teaching activities, including delivering lectures, clinical demonstrations, and conducting bedside teaching sessions.
- Guide and supervise junior staff in performing medical procedures and managing patient care.
- Provide feedback to trainees on their performance and offer constructive guidance.
- Research and Academic Activities:
- Participate in clinical research projects within the department.
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and publication of research studies in internal medicine.
- Assist in preparing research papers, case reports, and academic presentations for conferences.
- Stay updated with the latest developments in general medicine through journal reviews, attending CME programs, and academic conferences.
- Patient and Family Communication:
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognosis.
- Provide counseling to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and heart disease.
- Discuss preventive measures and lifestyle modifications to improve patient outcomes.
- Offer emotional support to patients and families in critical care or end-of-life situations.
- Emergency and Critical Care:
- Respond to medical emergencies, including cardiac arrests, respiratory failures, and shock, in both the wards and ICU.
- Initiate resuscitation and stabilization of acutely ill patients.
- Collaborate with the emergency medicine team for the management of acute cases.
- Ensure the proper transfer and care of patients requiring intensive care.
- Administrative Responsibilities:
- Ensure proper handover of patient care during shift changes.
- Assist in the coordination and smooth functioning of the hospital’s general medicine unit.
- Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, infection control policies, and documentation standards.
- Participate in department meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and case audits.
Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements:
- MBBS with a postgraduate degree (MD/DNB) in General Medicine.
- Experience:
- 1-3 years of post-MD residency experience in general or internal medicine.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of internal medicine, including diagnosis, management, and treatment of various medical conditions.
- Proficiency in clinical skills such as history-taking, physical examination, and interpretation of diagnostic tests.
- Ability to perform medical procedures commonly required in general medicine practice.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple patients and priorities in a busy hospital environment.
- Leadership skills to supervise and teach junior doctors and students.

- Willingness to work in shifts, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
