Job Summary: The Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine is a full-time academic position responsible for teaching, research, and clinical contributions within the department of forensic medicine. This role involves providing expert education to medical students, residents, and postgraduate students, conducting forensic medical investigations, and contributing to the academic and clinical goals of the department. The Assistant Professor will engage in research activities, collaborate with law enforcement and legal authorities, and provide medico-legal consultations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and practical sessions on forensic medicine to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
- Teach a wide range of topics in forensic medicine, including medico-legal case management, autopsy procedures, toxicology, criminal law, and forensic pathology.
- Design and update course curricula and learning materials, ensuring alignment with current medical and forensic standards.
- Supervise and mentor students in forensic medical techniques, including autopsies, post-mortem examinations, and medical report preparation.
- Evaluate student performance through assignments, examinations, presentations, and practical evaluations, providing constructive feedback to students.
- Advise and mentor students on academic and career development, offering guidance on research projects and professional opportunities in forensic medicine.
- Clinical & Forensic Consultations:
- Provide medico-legal consultations on cases involving trauma, death, poisoning, sexual assault, and other forensic matters.
- Conduct medical examinations and document findings for legal purposes, ensuring compliance with ethical and legal standards.
- Act as an expert witness in legal proceedings, presenting medico-legal findings in court and offering professional testimony when required.
- Collaborate with law enforcement, police, and legal authorities in the investigation of criminal cases, including providing forensic expertise.
- Perform clinical forensic examinations for both living and deceased individuals to determine cause of death or injury, documenting findings for judicial use.
- Autopsy & Postmortem Examination:
- Lead and perform autopsies to determine the cause of death in cases referred for forensic investigation.
- Conduct thorough post-mortem examinations, collect samples for toxicological analysis, and interpret findings in light of legal requirements.
- Prepare and present detailed autopsy reports and documentation, ensuring clarity and accuracy for use in legal contexts.
- Assist in the preparation of reports on specific cases, contributing to ongoing forensic investigations.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Engage in original research in the field of forensic medicine, with an emphasis on improving medico-legal practices, forensic pathology, toxicology, and the application of forensic science in criminal investigations.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, contribute to academic conferences, and collaborate with international and national experts in forensic science and medicine.
- Mentor graduate students, doctoral candidates, and junior faculty in their research endeavors, providing guidance on research design, data analysis, and publication.
- Seek external funding for research projects through grants and collaborations with other institutions or organizations.
- Departmental Contributions:
- Contribute to the academic growth and strategic direction of the department by participating in departmental meetings, committees, and curriculum planning.
- Assist in developing departmental policies and procedures related to forensic investigations, autopsies, and medico-legal reporting.
- Provide leadership in enhancing the forensic medicine program, including the development of new courses, educational tools, and learning opportunities.
- Contribute to the administration of the department, including record-keeping, preparing reports, and maintaining compliance with legal and ethical guidelines.
- Clinical Training & Supervision:
- Supervise and train residents, junior faculty, and students in forensic medical procedures, such as conducting autopsies, handling medico-legal cases, and preparing medico-legal reports.
- Organize and conduct practical training sessions on autopsy techniques, forensic investigations, and case discussions.
- Provide mentorship and guidance in the academic and clinical development of students and trainees, ensuring the highest standards of education and professional practice.
- Professional Engagement:
- Engage in continuous professional development by attending national and international forensic medicine conferences, workshops, and seminars.
- Maintain an active membership in relevant professional organizations, such as forensic pathology or medicolegal associations.
- Stay updated on developments in the field of forensic medicine, including emerging forensic technologies, legal standards, and ethical issues.
- Represent the department at academic and professional conferences and forums, promoting the work of the department and expanding professional networks.
- Administrative & Miscellaneous Duties:
- Assist with the administrative tasks of the department, including maintaining student records, preparing syllabi, and managing educational resources.
- Participate in quality assurance programs, ensuring that the department meets academic, clinical, and legal standards.
- Contribute to the preparation of reports for accreditation bodies and other regulatory agencies.
- Ensure proper functioning of forensic medicine laboratories and clinics, maintaining appropriate standards of health and safety.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent medical degree.
- M.D. or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Forensic Medicine or a related field.
- Additional training or certification in forensic pathology, toxicology, or a related area is a plus.
- Experience:
- At least 3-5 years of clinical experience in forensic medicine or related medical fields, including conducting autopsies, providing medico-legal consultations, and offering expert testimony.
Qualification – MBBS, MS/MD
