Assistant Professor Biochemistry

Job Summary:

The Assistant Professor in Biochemistry is an academic role responsible for teaching biochemistry courses, conducting research, and contributing to the academic development of the Biochemistry Department. The individual will be involved in delivering high-quality instruction to medical, dental, nursing, and allied health science students, mentoring students, and engaging in scientific research in the field of biochemistry. The Assistant Professor will play a key role in advancing knowledge in biochemistry and fostering an academic environment that supports research, teaching, and student success.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Education:
    • Deliver engaging and interactive lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions in biochemistry to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including those in medical, dental, and allied health programs.
    • Develop and update biochemistry course materials, including lecture notes, practical sessions, and online learning resources, ensuring content reflects current scientific knowledge and educational best practices.
    • Supervise and guide students in laboratory work, helping them understand experimental techniques, biochemical analysis, and data interpretation.
    • Conduct assessments of student progress through exams, quizzes, assignments, and practical evaluations, providing constructive feedback.
    • Provide academic mentorship and support to students, helping them navigate difficult concepts and promoting a deep understanding of biochemistry.
  2. Research and Scholarly Activities:
    • Engage in independent and collaborative research in biochemistry, with a focus on areas such as molecular biology, metabolic processes, biochemical pathways, or clinical biochemistry.
    • Publish original research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at national and international scientific conferences.
    • Supervise postgraduate students, medical students, and research assistants in their research projects, fostering a collaborative research environment.
    • Seek funding opportunities for research, write grant proposals, and contribute to obtaining external funding for departmental research projects.
  3. Curriculum Development and Improvement:
    • Actively participate in the development, review, and improvement of the biochemistry curriculum, ensuring it is up-to-date and aligns with current scientific advances and institutional goals.
    • Integrate modern teaching technologies, such as virtual labs, simulations, and digital resources, into the curriculum to enhance student learning.
    • Continuously assess the effectiveness of the biochemistry program and make improvements based on student feedback and educational research.
  4. Student Mentorship and Academic Support:
    • Provide mentorship to students, guiding them in their academic journey, career choices, and research interests.
    • Offer additional support to students struggling with course material, providing one-on-one assistance or organizing review sessions to clarify complex topics.
    • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages intellectual curiosity and student engagement in biochemistry.
  5. Departmental and Institutional Service:
    • Contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the Biochemistry Department, including participation in departmental meetings, course coordination, exam preparation, and grading.
    • Serve on institutional committees, task forces, and academic panels to support the overall mission of the department and the institution.
    • Collaborate with colleagues from other departments, promoting interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives.
    • Engage in community service activities, such as organizing workshops or outreach programs to enhance public understanding of biochemistry and its relevance to health and disease.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Stay current with developments in biochemistry, particularly in areas related to clinical applications, molecular biology, or biochemistry education.
    • Participate in professional development activities, such as workshops, conferences, and courses related to biochemistry, research techniques, and teaching methodologies.
    • Contribute to the academic community by publishing research, presenting at conferences, and engaging with professional organizations in biochemistry and related fields.

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Qualifications:
    • MBBS, MS/MD
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2-3 years of teaching experience in biochemistry or related fields at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.
    • Experience in conducting research in biochemistry, molecular biology, or clinical biochemistry, with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Experience in laboratory teaching, guiding students through practical experiments, and providing instruction on biochemical techniques and instrumentation.
