Job Summary: The Assistant Professor of Biochemistry is an academic position responsible for teaching, research, and contributing to the overall development of the Biochemistry department. The role involves delivering lectures, supervising laboratory sessions, engaging in research activities, and mentoring students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Assistant Professor will also participate in academic and administrative duties while staying up-to-date with the latest developments in the field of biochemistry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching & Instruction:
- Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in biochemistry to undergraduate medical, dental, nursing, and allied health students.
- Develop and update curriculum and instructional materials for undergraduate and postgraduate biochemistry courses, ensuring alignment with modern advancements in the field.
- Supervise laboratory sessions, ensuring students gain practical experience and a solid understanding of biochemical techniques and experimental protocols.
- Provide academic support to students through office hours, mentoring, and individualized feedback on assignments, exams, and projects.
- Conduct and assess student performance through exams, practical assessments, and written assignments, providing constructive feedback.
- Engage in interdisciplinary teaching with clinical departments, emphasizing the application of biochemistry in clinical and healthcare contexts.
- Research & Scholarly Activities:
- Conduct original research in biochemistry, focusing on areas such as molecular biology, metabolic processes, enzymology, genetics, or clinical biochemistry.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present at conferences to contribute to the academic reputation of the department.
- Secure research funding through grants from governmental agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners.
- Supervise and mentor graduate students and junior researchers, providing guidance on research projects, experimental design, and data analysis.
- Foster collaborative research within the department and across other disciplines to expand the scope and impact of biochemistry research.
- Departmental Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the academic development of the department, including curriculum design, course coordination, and the integration of new teaching methods and technologies.
- Assist in the recruitment, development, and mentoring of junior faculty members, residents, and teaching assistants within the department.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to departmental administration and planning efforts.
- Assist in the management and maintenance of biochemistry laboratories, ensuring that resources and equipment are well maintained for both teaching and research purposes.
- Participate in departmental service activities, such as reviewing student applications, organizing departmental events, and engaging in academic committees.
- Clinical Integration & Teaching:
- Collaborate with clinical departments to integrate biochemical concepts into clinical training, helping students understand the relevance of biochemistry in patient care and diagnosis.
- Contribute to case discussions and clinical rounds by explaining the biochemical mechanisms behind disease processes and diagnostic tests.
- Support the development of clinical skills programs by incorporating biochemistry into the teaching of clinical practices.
- Professional Development & Service:
- Stay current with the latest advancements in biochemistry, medical education, and research, ensuring that teaching methods and research projects are informed by current scientific developments.
- Attend professional development workshops, academic conferences, and seminars to enhance knowledge, teaching, and research skills.
- Represent the department at professional conferences, seminars, and academic meetings, contributing to the professional development of the department and institution.
- Actively contribute to professional organizations related to biochemistry and biomedical sciences.
- Supervision & Mentorship:
- Supervise graduate students and junior researchers, offering mentorship and guidance on their academic and research development.
- Provide career guidance and advice to students, helping them navigate academic and research pathways.
- Encourage a collaborative and inclusive learning environment, fostering student engagement and academic success.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a related field (M.D. with a specialization in biochemistry may also be considered).
- Postdoctoral experience in biochemistry or a related field is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of teaching experience at the university level, including both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
